Melania’s Response to Trump Jr. Wedding Drama

First Lady Melania Trump’s office has moved to separate her from the uproar over the wedding celebration of Donald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump’s eldest son, a three-day party partly financed by a Russian businessman. “Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,” her spokesperson told the Daily Mail on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

The spokesperson added: “Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.”

Her statement came days after an investigation, published September 14 by Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Joshua Kaplan and Alex Mierjeski. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of the three-day Bahamas celebration that followed the couple’s wedding had been covered by Umar Kremlev, the reporters found. His money paid for one of two private islands, at roughly $100,000 a night, a fireworks display costing about $70,000 and event planning, and the funds moved through IB Challenger, a Dubai entity affiliated with the boxing federation Kremlev runs and backed in part by Gazprom.

The International Boxing Association has been led by Kremlev, 43, since 2020. Russian President Vladimir Putin handed him the Order of Friendship about a month before the wedding, and days before it he traveled to China with Putin’s delegation. Sanctions from Ukraine have hit him over alleged ties to Putin and Russian security services; the United States has not imposed any.

A Wedding, and Then a Party

The distinction the Trumps are drawing rests on the calendar. Trump Jr. wed Bettina Anderson in a small private ceremony in May, and the island festivities that followed ran May 22 to 24 before about 50 guests — Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump among them, along with a Russian contingent. Kremlev’s money covered the parties, not the ceremony.

Trump pressed that gap while waving off the businessman. “I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day,” he said in a White House statement. “It was an ‘after-party’ given in their honor. Not a big deal! I was not present at the party.”

Trump Jr. and his wife called the spending a gift. Kremlev “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” they wrote on Instagram, calling it an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.” They added: “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda.” A spokesperson for Trump Jr. told ProPublica that “Umar is a personal friend of Don.”

His brother’s version does not square with that defense. Eric Trump was on the guest list and was photographed at the celebration, yet a spokesperson for him told ProPublica that “Eric has absolutely no clue who this person is.”

Two former counterintelligence officials told ProPublica the arrangement worried them. “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something,” said Frank Montoya Jr., a retired senior FBI official. A blunter assessment came from Holden Triplett, who ran counterintelligence at the National Security Council in Trump’s first term: “Money is a tried-and-true method to gain access.”

Trump had announced the engagement himself, at the White House holiday party in December 2025.

An Earlier Public Disavowal

In the spring, the first lady publicly rejected a very different story, rebutting claims that tied her to the financier Jeffrey Epstein. “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today,” she said on April 9. “The individuals lying about me are devoid of ethical standards, humility, and respect.”

“I have never been friends with Epstein,” she said, adding that she and Donald Trump were invited from time to time to the same parties as Epstein. She said Epstein had not introduced her to her husband, that she had never been aboard his plane or on his island, and that she was not his victim. “I met my husband, by chance, at a New York City party in 1998,” she said, and her first meeting with Epstein came two years later.

A Year of Few Appearances

The Kremlev statement landed in a stretch when the first lady’s calendar has drawn as much notice as anything she says. As of August 19 she had made 38 public appearances in 2026, with just five of them across June and July. The World Cup final on July 19 had been her last outing. One analysis put her at half the appearances she managed by the same point in her husband’s first term.

By mid-August she had been out of view for about a month. Events her husband attended went unattended by her, among them the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham in July and the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner that month; the original April dinner she had gone to, and it was cut short when a shooting near the security checkpoint sent the Secret Service to evacuate the couple. Since he returned to office she had delivered 29 speeches, compared with the 130 former First Lady Michelle Obama gave over a similar period. Nor is the pattern new: conspiracy theories grew out of her absences in the first term, including one that she used a body double.

She has hardly been off camera, though. Her documentary “Melania” opened in theaters in January and reached Prime Video in March, and a companion docuseries for the fall has been confirmed by Amazon, though it set no date. Rarely far from the president’s side is Trump aide Natalie Harp, a 35-year-old former One America News Network presenter who reportedly helps manage his Truth Social account. On his May state visit to China, the first lady did not travel with him.

Three accounts of the Bahamas celebration now sit side by side. An afterparty held in the couple’s honor is what the president calls it. A gift from a friend is how Trump Jr. and his wife describe Kremlev’s spending. And her office says the first lady had no part in the event or in how it was paid for.
