Mexican authorities have arrested two men over the shooting deaths of a rock musician, his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter and the young woman the couple employed as a nanny. All four were found dead on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at an apartment in an upscale area on the outskirts of Mexico City.
Prosecutors from the State of Mexico worked alongside the federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and Mexico City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security to make the arrests on Wednesday, September 2, authorities said. The two men are suspected of taking part in a multiple homicide in Atizapán de Zaragoza, in the State of Mexico, the Office of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico confirmed, adding that Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for the well-known indie rock band Camilo Séptimo, was among those killed.
The prosecutor’s office has named one of the men only as Diego Sebastián “N,” an associate of Meléndez, and accuses him of being the probable perpetrator. The second, identified as Gerardo “N,” is being investigated over the part he is alleged to have played. One of the suspects used his relationship with one of the victims to get inside the home, said Omar García Harfuch, who leads Mexico’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection.
What Officers Found in the Apartment
Four bodies turned up inside an apartment tower in the Zona Esmeralda neighborhood of Greater Mexico City at roughly 11:50 p.m. local time Tuesday, officers in Atizapán de Zaragoza said. The killings took place in the family’s penthouse, according to reporting as of September 5. Investigators believe the shootings happened hours before the discovery, in a window between 5:30 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.
Officials said gunmen shot three of those killed in the head, the couple’s small daughter among them; the fourth was hit in the back. Two of the victims had their hands bound, according to the prosecutor’s office. The household’s dog was also killed, its legs tied.
A six-year-old boy lived through the attack and was found physically unharmed at the scene, authorities said. He is the couple’s other son.
The State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office verified the circumstances of the deaths. Meléndez, 38, died alongside his wife, Ana Paula, 35, who was four months into a pregnancy, and the couple’s three-year-old daughter. Another account puts the musician at 35, one of several differing reports of his age.
Four Victims and a Grieving Family
The fourth person killed, Aleida Romero Victorio, 21, worked for the couple as their nanny, relatives told reporters.
“She was a very hardworking and responsible girl who did not deserve for this to be done to her,” said Lorena Victorio Cabrera, an aunt of the young woman.
The case has commanded attention throughout Mexico, partly because of who the victims were and partly because of the setting. The family was found dead inside their home in an apartment building in one of the wealthier corners of the metropolitan area.
Bandmates Mourn Their Keyboardist
Camilo Séptimo, a prominent name in the Mexican indie rock scene, posted its tribute to Meléndez on Instagram: “With deep sorrow we bid farewell to our dear brother Jonathan Samuel Melendez Ochoa. To his wife Ana Paula and his daughter Sofia. They will live forever in our hearts. We celebrate your music, your life and your light. Rest in peace.” As of September 5, the post had drawn more than 280,000 likes and thousands of comments.
For years Meléndez contributed to the band’s recordings and its live shows, and photographs of him include one from a 2024 press conference at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City.
Fans and fellow musicians have filled social media with tributes since the deaths were confirmed. A single evening, many of them observed, had erased an entire young family, along with an unborn child.
Where the Investigation Stands
Prosecutors laid out their case at an initial hearing on Saturday, September 5, telling the court that the two men believed the family kept millions of dollars in bitcoin. The State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office is pursuing charges of multiple homicide, unlawful termination of a pregnancy, and cruelty to a sentient being over the killing of the family’s dog, a one-year-old golden retriever named Nala. Diego Sebastián “N” has admitted taking apart the pistol used in the killings — it carried a silencer, which is why neighbors heard no gunfire — and throwing it into a ravine, prosecutors said, and Gerardo “N,” described in the investigation as his driver, drove the pair in and out of the gated development and supplied the tools, zip ties, gloves and face masks. After nearly nine hours, the judge ordered both men held in pretrial detention at the Barrientos prison in Tlalnepantla.
Mexican convention keeps suspects to a first name and an initial until charges are formally filed, and that practice accounts for the pair being publicly identified only as Diego Sebastián “N” and Gerardo “N.” The state prosecutor’s announcement on Wednesday, September 2, identified the musician only by his initials, J.S.M.O., according to reporting as of September 5. Their defense lawyers asked for extra time to answer the accusations, and the hearing resumes on Wednesday, September 9, when the judge decides whether to bind the pair over for trial.
State of Mexico prosecutors hold jurisdiction over the killings in Atizapán de Zaragoza, and federal security officials and Mexico City police joined in making the arrests. Diego Sebastián “N” and Gerardo “N” remain the only people charged in connection with the deaths, and the investigation into the roles each is alleged to have played is continuing.
