Mike Ditka, the punishing tight end who remade his position and then returned to Chicago to coach the Bears to the only Super Bowl title in franchise history, has died at 86. His death was announced Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, by Jarrett Payton, son of Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, who played for Ditka with the Bears.
The family’s statement did not give a cause of death or say where he died. “Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever,” the family said.
He was “Iron Mike” as a player and “Da Coach” as the scowling, mustachioed figure who ran the Chicago sideline for 11 seasons, a tenure crowned by a 1985 team that many consider the most dominant in NFL history.
From Aliquippa to the Bears
Ditka was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and raised in the steel country of Aliquippa. He became an All-American at the University of Pittsburgh, and George Halas drafted him for the Bears at No. 5 overall in 1961. That fall he was named The Associated Press NFL Rookie of the Year.
He revolutionized the tight end position over 12 professional seasons — six in Chicago, two in Philadelphia and four in Dallas — making five Pro Bowls and earning two first-team All-Pro selections. In 158 regular-season games he caught 427 passes for 5,812 yards and 43 touchdowns. He won the 1963 NFL championship with the Bears and a Super Bowl VI ring with the Cowboys following the 1971 season.
Da Coach and the 1985 Bears
Ditka moved into coaching as an assistant in Dallas under coach Tom Landry, collecting a second ring in Super Bowl XII. He took over the Bears in 1982 and held the job through 1992. The defining night came in New Orleans in January 1986, when Chicago battered the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX and two of his players, Steve McMichael and William Perry, carried him off the field. He was voted AP NFL Coach of the Year twice, in 1985 and 1988.
The persona outgrew the sport. His bark and his bearing inspired the “Bill Swerski’s Superfans” sketches on “Saturday Night Live,” in which a table of Chicagoans toasted “Da Coach” — though Ditka never appeared in them.
A Rough Return in New Orleans
His second act as a head coach went badly. Ditka ran the New Orleans Saints from 1997 to 1999 and went 15-33. He traded every pick the Saints held in the 1999 draft, plus two of their first three picks in 2000, to move up for running back Ricky Williams, then posed with him for a magazine cover while Williams wore a wedding dress.
He finished with 14 seasons as an NFL head coach and a record of 121-95. Only Ditka and Tom Flores have won Super Bowls as a player, an assistant coach and a head coach.
Honors, Setbacks and a Retired Number
The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined him in 1988, while he was still coaching the Bears. He was later named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams. The same year as his induction, he suffered a heart attack, and he was convicted of driving under the influence during his tenure in Chicago. In the years that followed he pressed the league and the union for better benefits for retired players.
Chicago retired his No. 89 at halftime of a Monday night game against the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 9, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Diana Ditka.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement from the league on Friday, and the Saints released one honoring the years Ditka spent in New Orleans. In Chicago, where he arrived as a rookie and never really left, the franchise framed his death as a civic loss: “Mike Ditka embodied the spirit of Chicago and will be deeply missed,” the Bears said.
