Australian rock singer Gary “Angry” Anderson, who fronted Rose Tattoo for half a century, has died aged 79. He died in Sydney, according to the band’s Instagram account, as reported Sept. 25, 2026.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, according to a report updated Sept. 24, which notes that Anderson had been hospitalized after cardiac arrest while Rose Tattoo was touring in Germany. He died roughly a month and a half after a heart attack struck him during the band’s farewell tour of Europe.

A representative said in a statement posted on the band’s social media channels: “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gary ‘Angry’ Anderson on the eve of Monday 21 September 2026, surrounded by his loved ones here in Australia.”

The statement continued: “Angry was a devoted father, and much-loved member of his friends, bandmates and the wider music and entertainment community. His loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him both here in Australia and overseas.”

The family and the band asked for privacy, said they would not give interviews as they grieve and thanked fans for their prayers and messages of support. Their statement closed: “Stay young, grow strong.” As of Sept. 24, no information had been released about Anderson’s funeral.

A Farewell Tour Cut Short

The band had shared a photo of Anderson performing in Cologne on Aug. 8, his last performance. Rose Tattoo canceled its next scheduled show, at the Alcatraz Metal festival in Belgium. The following day, Aug. 10, the group announced that Anderson had been hospitalized with a medical issue and that the remaining dates of the European farewell run would not go ahead.

Three weeks after that announcement, the band said in a social media post that its frontman remained in the hospital. It is not known when Anderson was medically repatriated to Australia.

Accounts of the timing differ. Some published reports date the cardiac arrest to “late August,” while the original account of the tour places the Cologne show on Aug. 8 and the hospitalization announcement on Aug. 10.

Anderson had been marking 50 years of Rose Tattoo when the European tour was halted, and he showed no interest in slowing down. After the August cancellations, the band had been scheduled to return to Australian stages this month and to join fellow musician Suzi Quatro on the Red Hot Summer Tour, which kicks off in November.

“There’s a voice inside you that says you need the freedom of the road…even at 77,” Anderson said in an interview. “It has been a fabulous ride. It still is.”

From Buster Brown to Rose Tattoo

Anderson was born in Melbourne in 1947 and trained as a fitter and turner before music took over. He made his name in his home city as the singer for Buster Brown, then moved to Sydney and joined the new band that Rose Tattoo founder Pete Wells was assembling.

The nickname dated to childhood, when a quick temper earned him “Angry Ant,” soon clipped to Angry. The name never left him. Small in stature, he proved a fearsome presence in the rough-and-tumble mosh pits of Sydney’s 1970s pub circuit, and the Tatts built a reputation as a band nobody wanted to cross.

Charts, Ballads and Screen Work

The chart breakthrough came in 1977 with the anthem “Bad Boy For Love,” followed by the rock classics “Rock’n’Roll Outlaw” and “We Can’t Be Beaten,” songs that spent five decades as fixtures of backyard barbecue playlists and sports highlight packages. Rose Tattoo’s self-titled 1978 debut album reached No. 1 on the British heavy metal chart, as did its follow-up, “Assault and Battery.”

For 50 years, Anderson ranked among Australia’s most distinctive hard rock frontmen. Rose Tattoo was inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006 and released its last album, “Outlaws,” in 2020. His biggest hit was a long way from the pub-rock snarl. The solo single “Suddenly,” released in 1987, reached No. 2 in Australia and No. 3 in the UK, and it soundtracked the wedding of Scott and Charlene on “Neighbours,” an episode that drew one of the largest audiences of any program ever made in Australia. Anderson described the ballad as the story of a man reaching the point of knowing himself well enough to let his guard down. The song found a new audience in recent weeks through Netflix’s Kylie documentary series.

In 1985 Anderson had a role in the movie “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” as Ironbar Bassey.

Honors and Charity Work

Anderson was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 and was known for charity work and youth advocacy, according to a report updated Sept. 24.

Television veteran Ray Martin, remembering Anderson’s work for sick children, said: “people realized Angry Anderson was fair dinkum.”
