The image of President Donald Trump on a golf course with a blonde woman, which spread across social media around Monday, September 14, 2026, is not what it looked like. The sharper of the two versions in circulation is an AI-generated fabrication, and it arrived with a giveaway visible to anyone willing to count: a hand with six fingers. On Wednesday, September 16, the White House confirmed the obvious.
“This is clearly a fake photo,” a White House official, who was not named, told the Daily Beast.
Six Fingers, One Watermark
Two versions of the same fabricated scene made the rounds: one blurry and low-resolution, one noticeably crisper. The wheels come off in the crisper one. In it, the woman’s right hand has six fingers as she grips a golf club, and a fact check published September 15 by the fact-checking site Snopes turned up a watermark on that version indicating the picture had been generated with OpenAI tools. Reader emails prompted that review in the first place, which means members of the public were asking the right question while the image was still collecting views.
The blurry version carried no watermark and was too degraded to show the usual AI tells — but it is fabricated too, and softening a picture into mush does not conjure a real scene behind it. A closer examination of the higher-resolution version also flagged golf equipment and background elements that never settle into consistent shapes, and neither file contained any useful camera, date, location or editing metadata. Hany Farid, co-founder of the deepfake detection company GetReal, determined that the clearer version was AI-generated and derived from the lower-quality one.
Then there is the small matter of the entire professional photography industry coming up empty. Searches of Associated Press, Reuters and Getty Images archives produced no corresponding photograph, a review of major wire services found no genuine picture of Trump and White House aide Natalie Harp both dressed in white on a golf course, and no credible news organization or tabloid was found to have published the image. Trump did golf at his Trump Organization-owned course in Ireland on September 13 — but photographs and satellite views of that course show no trees, unlike the fabricated image.
Traced to a YouTube Thumbnail
A reverse image search using Google Lens traced the oldest known appearance of the picture to the thumbnail of a September 14 YouTube video posted by political commentator Keith Edwards. Edwards said his thumbnail team came across the picture online rather than creating or altering it, and that they had not independently verified where it originated. Only the back of the woman’s head is visible. “I don’t think her identity can be confirmed from this image alone,” he told Snopes.
Snopes has twice before checked pictures that first surfaced as thumbnails on Edwards’ videos, and in one of those cases he confirmed he had used an AI tool to generate the image. The fabricated picture, meanwhile, was posted widely on X, Threads and Instagram. Snopes left the claim unrated pending further evidence, because the low-resolution version did not display the same red flags, and said it would update its report if more information surfaces.
Who Natalie Harp Is
Harp, 35, has worked for Trump since 2022, after leaving her role as an anchor and host at One America News. She is executive assistant to the president — her financial disclosure identifies her as special assistant to the president and executive assistant to the president — on a taxpayer-funded salary of $150,000 a year. She has been nicknamed the “human printer,” a tag earned by staying at Trump’s side to fulfill requests: fetching merchandise, running Google searches, printing out stories and suggesting possible Truth Social posts.
She also traveled with the delegation on Trump’s two-day visit to Ireland on September 12 and 13, which is part of why she has appeared in so many recent photographs — real ones, taken by actual photographers, with the standard number of fingers. Harp has not commented publicly on the image.
The White House’s Six Words
The administration’s entire public assessment runs six words, and it is not a bad summary of the situation. The White House did not provide Snopes with genuine photographs of Trump and Harp golfing that could have been lined up against the fabrication for comparison. Trump himself, for his part, has been posting AI-generated images on his Truth Social platform at a rapid clip, without the White House issuing statements about those. The lesson here is cheaper than any detection software: before sharing a startling picture, count the fingers.
