A horse strayed from its path during a rodeo in Alberta, Canada, on Saturday, September 5, 2026, and struck Georgina Lightning, the Cree director who was the first Indigenous woman from North America to helm a major feature; she died at 63. Paramedics treated her at the scene and declared her dead there, Alberta RCMP said.

A documentary shoot had brought her to the Enoch Rodeo Grounds on the Enoch Cree Nation, where the three-day Indian Relay was running. Officers were called at 6:40 p.m. local time, Alberta RCMP said; she was photographing from a designated media area when the horse struck her. Alberta’s workplace-safety regulator, Occupational Health and Safety, has taken over the investigation. Mourners will gather at the River Cree venue on September 16 for her funeral, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tributes From Community and Co-Stars

A Facebook post from the Enoch Cree Nation confirmed her death, saying the nation was mourning the loss of a community member and holding the family in its thoughts and prayers. The statement, issued September 5, also asked the public to “refrain from sharing videos, photos, or speculation related to the incident on social media.”

Canadian actor Jessica Matten, of “Dark Winds,” said she had been with Lightning in July and recalled her kindness and warmth, offering prayers to the family. Lily Gladstone sent love to Lightning’s family; her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” carried her to a Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture drama, the first Indigenous actor to take that award. Tim Healy, who worked with Lightning on the British series “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet,” wrote on X: “RIP Georgina lovely lady and a joy to work with.”

The actor and musician Crystle Lightning, 45, said she was shattered and wrecked in a Facebook post after losing her mother. “I have lost my mother, my sons’ Kohkum [grandmother], my matriarch, my role model, my confidant,” she wrote. A later post described her drawing on her mother’s strength and asking her to appear in dreams; she remembered a wave and a parting instruction to have a good time when the two of them last saw each other. She also wrote: “I wish I could hold you one more time and touch your beautiful new silver hair.” She posted headshots of her mother taken two weeks earlier.

Friends Kim Mathias and Fabrienne Grisel also paid tribute on Facebook; Mathias wrote that Lightning “had determination, vision, and the ability to turn those visions into reality.”

Breaking Barriers Behind the Camera

Lightning wrote, directed, produced and starred in the 2008 supernatural thriller “Older Than America,” her first film as a director and the credit her own community leads on. Adam Beach, Wes Studi and Bradley Cooper were among its cast. Alberta Native News called her a trailblazing Cree filmmaker and said she was “perhaps best known” for it; the same publication had run an interview with her on March 4, 2026. Festival juries handed the film more than 20 prizes, and Lightning dedicated it to her father, George De Jong, who died by suicide after what he endured in Canada’s residential school system. Drawing in part on her family’s experience, it explored the schools’ impact and intergenerational trauma.

She co-founded Tribal Alliance Productions, a Native-owned company promoting Indigenous storytelling, and also helped found the Native Media Network. Her producing credits included “The Wind & the Reckoning” and “Sawtooth.”

Three Decades on Screen

As an actor she turned up in “Backroads,” “DreamKeeper,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “The West Wing,” “Blackstone,” “Trickster,” “Three Pines,” “Alaska Daily,” “Johnny Greyeyes” and Babak Jalali’s 2018 drama “Land,” and she voiced a role in Disney’s “Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World.” She also appeared in the 2025 horror film “Die My Love,” which stars Jennifer Lawrence.

To British viewers she was a face from “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.” The comedy-drama took her on in 2002 for its third run; across four episodes she played Lainie Proudfoot, girlfriend and later common-law wife of Brian “Bomber” Busbridge, played by Pat Roach. The show’s original premise was a group of British laborers working side by side on a construction site in West Germany. The 2002 run had them dismantle Middlesbrough’s Transporter Bridge and rebuild it on an Arizona reservation, with Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall, Christopher Fairbank, Noel Clarke, Healy and Kevin Whately also in the cast.

Born in Edmonton on July 4, 1963, and a member of the Samson Cree Nation, Lightning worked extensively in childcare before entering the industry, managing youth programs and working in daycares. A year of fine arts study in Alberta ended when she dropped out to chase acting, and in 1990 she moved with her three children to Los Angeles to train at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. There she won the Michael Toma Award for most-improved actor and joined the academy’s repertory company.

Filmmaker Magazine named her one of its 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2007, and in 2010 she received the White House Project’s Epic Award for emerging artist. She took prizes at the American Indian Film Festival, and she received a 2021 Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the CBC series “Trickster.”

For more than three decades she championed North American Indigenous cultures and pressed for stronger representation on screen, in work that took in acting, directing, producing, coaching and cultural consulting. A close friend, Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, said Lightning had been determined to tell stories nobody else was telling and to claim space where First Nations voices were not being heard. She described her as someone who held those in power to account while showing enormous affection for people, and said she and Lightning’s children had agreed that they must finish what she started.

Three children survive her — Crystle, Cody and William Lightning — all of whom work or have worked as actors.
