Beloved TV Comedy Star Dead at 57

Reggie McFadden, the stand-up comedian, actor and writer who reached national audiences through HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” and the Fox sketch series “In Living Color,” was 57 when he died. Reports of his death began circulating on Oct. 4, 2026, and the United States State Department contacted the family, after which his sister — the acclaimed bestselling novelist and creative-writing professor Bernice McFadden — confirmed the death. He died in Tanzania, the East African country where he had reportedly lived for about 18 years.

What happened to him is still unclear. Neither a funeral home nor any medical authority nor a family representative has put out an exact date of death or a medical cause. Relatives say no one has told them how or precisely when he died. According to his sister, the State Department told relatives he died there, but they do not yet know exactly when he died or what caused his death.

Bernice McFadden told the Los Angeles Times that the family had been estranged from her brother for nearly two decades.

“Our mother is taking it particularly hard, as are his children and other siblings. Reggie was estranged from the family. The last time we saw him was in 2007. We were aware that he was living in Tanzania but knew very little about his life there,” she told the newspaper.

A Career Built on Stand-Up

McFadden was born Nov. 30, 1968, and Brooklyn, N.Y., raised him. Comedy became his route to a different life, and the New York comedy scene was where he sharpened his material.

His profile widened in 1991 with an appearance on HBO’s influential stand-up showcase “Def Comedy Jam.” Numerous comedians used the program as a launching pad, and it put McFadden in front of viewers across the country.

“In Living Color” took him on for its fifth and final season during the 1993-94 television season, and he appeared in numerous sketches as part of the ensemble. The Fox series, described as one of the most influential sketch-comedy programs of its era, saw the careers of Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier and the Wayans family launched and elevated through it.

His other television credits included “Martin,” “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” “Coach,” “Moesha,” “Getting Personal” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” where he played a police officer. On film, he appeared in comedian Adam Sandler’s 2000 comedy “Little Nicky” and in “Jacob’s Ladder.”

Stand-up remained central to his professional identity. He performed on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and “Last Call with Carson Daly.” He also recorded a “Comedy Central Presents” special and worked regularly in Las Vegas.

The Tanzania Years

Tanzania became his home later in life, and McFadden spent roughly 18 years there building a career away from American television. Public profiles indicate he became involved in music, business and entrepreneurial projects, and his business ventures there spanned entertainment and gold mining.

He founded Olduvai Records, a gold-mining and entertainment production company in Tanzania, and identified himself as owning the company on his Facebook page.

The Olduvai Records website lists a distribution relationship with Sony Music’s The Orchard. In May 2025, the label released the compilation “ENJOY, Vol. 1,” which blends rap, R&B and Afro-influenced music across its track list. McFadden put out his own music as well, some of it tied to the label.

Tributes and Survivors

Fellow comedians and fans offered tributes once news of his death spread, recalling a performer from the generation that helped shape Black comedy on American television during the 1990s. Comedian Tony Luewellyn called him a veteran member of the comedy community, while comedian Guy Torry honored him as a talented writer and comedian.

“Reggie McFadden was a very talented, veteran comedian and actor whose diverse choices and dedication to his profession were highly evident,” Prof. Rel Dowdell, a Hampton University film studies director, said in a statement.

His mother, Vivian McFadden, survives him, as do his two sons, Jaron and Myles; his sisters, Bernice and Misty; and his brother, Kris. Further details about his death have not been released by the family.
