Guilherme Lago, the older brother of Elis Lima Carneiro, announced the death of the 5-year-old Brazilian girl in an emotional video posted to the sisters’ Instagram profile on Sept. 30, 2026, the day she died. Elis had a rare, fatal aging disorder, and her parents documented her life for more than 1.5 million Instagram followers.
“Hoje a Elis descansa no Senhor. É muito difícil porque a gente não queria que acontecesse, mas não podemos ser egoístas e eu acho que o Senhor foi muito bom com a gente,” Lago said in the video.
Elis lived with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), a rare genetic condition that causes rapid aging in young children. Brazilian outlets reported that she died of a widespread lung infection. She was born May 4, 2021.
A Farewell in Boa Vista
The family held the wake at the chapel of the Shalon funeral home in Boa Vista, Brazil. An Instagram post invited anyone who wanted to come, including anyone who followed her: “Everyone who wishes to say goodbye to Elis, offer their solidarity to our family or accompany us on this last path will be very welcome,” the post said. It closed, “Thank you for all the love you always had for our little one.”
The funeral procession left the Shalon Funeral Home Chapel at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 for Parque Campo da Saudade Cemetery, with burial scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The turnout at the funeral in Boa Vista reflected the strength of the community formed around her.
In a follow-up Instagram post on Oct. 1, after the burial, the family wrote: “Today, love was present in every hug, every tear and every person who was there to say goodbye to our Elis.” The family added in the same post, “Our little girl had a captivating smile, so many laughs and a unique way about her that won over so many hearts.”
Tributes Fill the Comments
The post announcing the death drew more than 936,000 likes and nearly 100,000 comments as of Oct. 1. Tributes filled her comment sections within hours, and internet users dwelled on the bravery Elis showed through a complicated illness she faced over a long period. Others wrote that they had learned of the death only when it surfaced in their feeds.
Figures from the entertainment world joined the mourning, among them Brazilian singer Ana Castela and Gabrielle Prado, who left condolences on the family’s post. Many of the more than 1.5 million people who followed along described Elis as a source of inspiration.
Believed the Only Twins
Elis’ twin sister, Eloá, has also been diagnosed with HGPS. The two are believed to be the only twins in the world living with the condition, a detail that drew researchers, reporters and strangers to the account her parents kept. HGPS is fatal, and average life expectancy for those who have it is about 14.5 years.
The twins’ parents are advocates for the rights of people with rare syndromes, and Elis herself had attended public hearings on the subject. Her mother, Eleismar Carneiro, told local media that Elis was never fearful, loved funny things and laughed at everything.
The Instagram account showed Elis playing with toys, sitting through doctor’s appointments and spending time with family — the ordinary texture of a small child’s days. It remains a record of a childhood lived largely in view of strangers: the toys, the hospital corridors, the ordinary afternoons.
