A political commentator spent part of a YouTube broadcast on Sept. 27, 2026, picking apart the first lady’s glowing description of her husband’s work habits, and the segment sent talk about the state of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s marriage roaring back to life. Estrangement claims circulating as of Sept. 30 remain unverified.
What the Commentator Said
Political commentator David Pakman, host of the YouTube program “The David Pakman Show,” devoted part of that broadcast to dissecting the first lady’s glowing description of her husband’s work habits. “In fact, we have reason to believe she’s completely estranged from Donald Trump,” Pakman said.
Pakman said she is not positioned to assess the president’s work habits and that the two appear to be living mostly apart. He described her as far more independent from her husband than other first ladies, and said the couple sleep in separate bedrooms whenever they do find themselves under the same roof.
She may well check his calendar and know his schedule in detail, Pakman allowed, but the host questioned how she would have any sense of how many hours he actually logs. Blocks of executive time, golf, television viewing, a 12-to-5 schedule and an increased frequency of the president falling asleep were what he pointed to. The president’s public schedule frequently lists an 11 a.m. start for his first official meeting, with a lunch break to follow. Presidents do their most important work away from the cameras, Pakman also acknowledged.
Her Cable Interview Remarks
Melania Trump appeared Sept. 23 on “Fox & Friends,” where hosts wanted to know what the president is doing differently and how he is faring in his second term compared with his first. Very focused was how she described him, and she said he has a lot on his plate and credited him with doing the best he can. “He’s from morning until evening nonstop working,” she told the hosts.
His speeches and decisions draw blunt assessments from her, she said on that program, and she conceded that her verdicts do not always land well.
Moments From the Xi Visit
During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Sept. 23-25 state visit, Melania Trump appeared to pull back as Xi moved toward her for a handshake at the National Archives on Sept. 25. The moment went viral, with users debating whether she avoided the handshake. She had already greeted Xi and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan earlier in the visit.
Video from the same visit showed Trump reaching for Melania Trump’s hand and keeping hold of it as the couple descended red-carpeted stairs while she appeared to pull away. In a separate clip from the Chinese delegation’s arrival at Joint Base Andrews, she barely reacted when Trump patted her on the back. Commenters split. “He has to hold onto her to get down the stairs as there isn’t a rail to hold on to,” one commenter wrote on the stairs video. “lol she hates his guts!” another wrote.
On Sept. 25, Xi invited the president and first lady to the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. “We do welcome Mr. President and the first lady to visit China,” Xi said.
Reports of Separate Lives
Trump biographer Michael Wolff told listeners in May 2025 on the Daily Beast podcast that the president and the first lady lead separate lives and are separated. A fraud was what the White House called Wolff in response. Wolff wrote “Fire & Fury,” published in 2018, and “All or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America.”
Shawn McCreesh, a White House reporter for the New York Times, wrote in 2025 that the first lady does not really make her home at the White House, dropping out of public view for weeks at a stretch and staying instead at Trump Tower in Manhattan or at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Two people with knowledge of her schedule put her time there at fewer than 14 days since the Jan. 20, 2025, inauguration, they told McCreesh, a tally measured as of that May 2025 report. Administration officials told McCreesh she was there more often than the public knew, though they declined to offer specifics.
A Florida-based political source told People in February 2025 that shooting her Amazon Prime documentary about her life and her time as first lady had been the focus of those trips, with filming in several locations, including the White House.
Melania Trump made an appearance in North Carolina on Sept. 15. Wolff suggested the event may have served another purpose — generating material for her Amazon project.
The White House announced it will open its gardens to visitors on Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18, with tours of the South Lawn, Rose Garden, Kitchen Garden, expanded Beehive and new helipad. The weekend comes as a rare burst of public first lady activity after months of low visibility. It is unclear whether Melania Trump will appear.
Separate Bedrooms and Lingering Rumors
New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan published a 2026 book, “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump,” that places the first lady in the White House master bedroom, known internally as Room 219, while the president took Room 220, next to the Yellow Oval. Not since Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, has a presidential couple regularly used separate bedrooms, by the description applied to the Trumps.
The chatter cuts both ways. Some accounts hold the couple has never been better. Tension gets traced by others to the president’s reported closeness with his executive assistant, Natalie Harp, though those claims are unverified. Rumors about Trump’s relationship with the aide have drawn pushback from the first lady’s senior advisor, and she reportedly left her seat next to the president after he called Harp over at an event.
Melania Trump splits her time between Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago. The president’s Manhattan hush money trial, where he was convicted of 34 counts of altering business records related to hush money payments, went on without her. During the first administration, months passed before she moved into the White House, a delay that spared the couple’s son, Barron Trump, then 10, a change of schools midway through the year. Time with that son keeps shrinking, she has since said.
