President Donald Trump handed a Texas crowd an unexpected glimpse of his home life on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, telling supporters at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio that his wife of 21 years, First Lady Melania Trump, addresses him the way his staff does — as “sir.”
The 80-year-old president was in town to rally support for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, 63, the Republican Senate candidate trailing Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, 37, a seminarian, in recent polling. Trump was deep into an extended riff about Talarico’s eating habits — a favorite line of attack that the Democrat flatly rejects — when the conversation turned, improbably, to phonetics.
“You know, my wife told me, ‘Sir, do me a favor. You have to do me just a little bit of a favor. It’s not vaygan, it’s vegan,’” the president said.
Trump told the crowd he doesn’t follow that sort of thing, then said the first lady, 56, had urged him to pronounce the word properly — though as he recounted the exchange, he referred to her with a masculine pronoun. “I called it vaygan, vaygan. How the hell would I know? I like steak,” Trump added. Later in the speech he circled back to the subject, said the word correctly and addressed his wife by name again, noting he had gotten it right. He also passed along her greetings to the crowd. She was not at the coliseum.
Inside the Vegan Attack Line
The dietary fixation traces back to remarks Talarico made to the Texas Humane Legislation Network, in which he described reducing meat consumption as an existential piece of the fight against climate change. Trump and Paxton’s campaign have since insisted the Democrat secretly avoids animal products — Paxton has taken to calling him “Tofu Talarico,” while Trump has settled on “Talafreako.”
Talarico has repeatedly denied being vegan or vegetarian. “I’m an eighth-generation Texan. I’ve been eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton’s first indictment,” Talarico has said, and his campaign has pushed back by circulating images of him eating barbecue and turkey. At the rally, Trump claimed without evidence that his opponent had forced himself to attend barbecues for political reasons, was getting sick from the meat and had dropped out of sight as a result.

The moment might have slipped by unnoticed, except the White House’s Rapid Response account posted the video of Trump saying his wife calls him “sir.” Users on X promptly questioned whether the first lady really addresses her husband that way, and several noted the oddity of a president born in New York getting an English pronunciation lesson from a wife born in the former Yugoslavia.
Trump’s trouble with the word has been building for a while. At an earlier rally he worked “vaygan” into a riff about Talarico. Trump has also taken shots at Talarico’s diet at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas and aboard Air Force One.
What the Texas Polls Show
The pronunciation detour landed in the middle of a race Republicans expected to be a formality. A Fox News poll released Oct. 2 put the Democrat ahead 51 percent to 49 percent. If Talarico holds on, he would be the first Democrat to win a statewide election in Texas since 1994. The last Democrat to win a Senate race in the state was Lloyd Bentsen, re-elected to a fourth term in 1988.
Wednesday’s event was Trump’s fourth trip to Texas in six weeks. San Antonio is a majority-Hispanic, working-class city — two groups Trump won big in 2024 — though Kamala Harris carried surrounding Bexar County by 9 points. This time the room was noisier: the rally drew an unusual number of protesters, with police escorts called on 12 occasions.
Paxton’s campaign, meanwhile, has been running ads questioning Talarico’s testosterone and resurfacing an old clip of him describing God as non-binary, while Talarico has brushed the attacks aside as a distraction from Republican corruption. Trump has called for a public debate between the two candidates. Election Day is Nov. 3.
