Music Legend Dies Suddenly at 64

The Detroit producer who gave techno its name was booked to play a club in Mexico City and never took the stage.

Juan Atkins, the DJ and producer widely called the “Godfather of Techno,” was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, before a scheduled performance at YuYu Cine Club. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. He was 64. His management company confirmed the death on social media on Sunday, Nov. 1, and no cause of death has been reported.

Kevin Saunderson, who came up alongside Atkins and Derrick May as the Belleville Three, called the news heartbreaking in a post on social media. “Juan was the originator of Techno, a true visionary who opened the door for so many of us, myself included,” Saunderson wrote. He said Atkins had shown him how to finish his first record, “Triangle of Love.”

He First Heard Kraftwerk on Mojo

Atkins was born in Detroit in 1964 and raised mostly in Belleville, Mich., where he met May and Saunderson in high school. The three are credited as the architects of Detroit techno, a sound that fused the house music coming out of Chicago with the electronic music of bands like Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra. He performed as a DJ before he made records. At Washtenaw Community College in Ypsilanti, Mich., he met Richard “Rik” Davis, a Vietnam War veteran, and in 1980 the two formed Cybotron.

Both men loved the Afro-futurist funk of Parliament-Funkadelic and the early electronic music of Kraftwerk, and they built Cybotron out of synthesizers and drum machines alone. The duo’s debut single, “Alleys of Your Mind,” arrived in 1981 and found an audience on Black radio across the region thanks to the Electrifying Mojo, the Detroit DJ whom Atkins credited with shaping his taste. Atkins told Music Technology Magazine in 1988 that it was on Mojo’s show — a mix of imported records, funk and rock — that he first heard Kraftwerk, in 1978 or 1979.

Cybotron’s debut album, “Enter,” came out on the independent label Fantasy in 1983 and carried “Clear,” the robotic electro-funk track that set the sonic template for techno. It has been sampled dozens of times. One of those samples became the musical bed for Missy Elliott’s 2005 hit “Lose Control.” The duo also released “Cosmic Cars” in 1982 and “Techno City” in 1984.

‘No UFO’s’ Crosses the Atlantic

Atkins left Cybotron in 1985 and started his own label, Metroplex, where he released solo tracks as Model 500. The first of them, “No UFO’s,” is credited with carrying Detroit techno across the Atlantic, inspiring the U.K. compilation “Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit.” Rolling Stone placed the single at No. 94 on its list of the 200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time. “Night Drive” followed in 1985 and “The Chase” in 1989.

The genre got its name in 1988, when Atkins contributed a track called “Techno Music” to a compilation. He told The Guardian in 2024 that Detroit crowds, and especially Black kids in the city, embraced the sound long before anyone attached a label to it, and that Europe supplied the title once the music got there.

He kept recording under his own name and under the aliases Infiniti, whose 1998 album “Skynet” showcased his most minimal work, and Audio Tech. His albums include “Deep Space” (1995), “Mind and Body” (1999) and “Digital Solutions” (2015). He revived Cybotron, formed the duo Borderland with German producer Moritz von Oswald and toured with May and Saunderson as the Belleville Three in the 2010s.

The Mayor Says Detroit Lost an Original

May paid tribute on Instagram, writing that Atkins had worked for years without complaint and without talking about how sick he was, and asking that his legacy, his effort and his accomplishments be respected.

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said in a statement that the city had lost an original, and credited Atkins, May and Saunderson with carrying a sound made in Detroit to clubs and festivals on every continent. She said Atkins spent more than four decades recording and touring, and made a path for the Detroit artists who came after him.

Atkins performed for many years at Detroit’s Movement festival, the annual techno gathering at Hart Plaza, as well as at its forebear, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, which launched in 2000. The Detroit Pistons honored him, May and Saunderson earlier this year with a merchandise collaboration.

Jason Huvaere, the head of Movement’s production team, Paxahau, said on Sunday, Nov. 1 that Atkins inspired the entire electronic music revolution. “In the words of the late Juan Atkins, nobody started calling it techno until he started calling it techno,” Huvaere said.
