In a disturbing development in San Diego, California, the remains of Mary Margaret Haxby-Jones, who would have been 81 today, were found in a chest freezer at a home in the Allied Gardens area.

Discovered on December 22, 2023, the finding has sparked a complex investigation into what seems to be a case that stayed concealed for almost ten years.

The San Diego Police Department, working closely with the medical examiner’s office, has identified the deceased as Haxby-Jones.

The circumstances of her death remain puzzling, and officials are treating it as an unusual case. Lt. Jud Campbell from the San Diego Police Department remarked that the absence of clear signs of trauma on the body contributes to the enigma.

Authorities have indicated that Haxby-Jones, who had a long career as a nurse anesthetist, could have been dead or missing for up to nine years. Her body was discovered by relatives of the current resident, who were visiting from another city. The relatives, not related to Haxby-Jones, found her remains in the freezer at the home located on Zion Avenue in the 4900 block.

The case has garnered substantial attention, primarily because she is believed to have been deceased or missing for a potentially extended period, with estimates suggesting up to nine years.

Investigators have begun to probe the events leading up to her death and the duration following it. No missing person’s report had been lodged for her, but she is presumed to have resided at the address at some time before her body was found.

Given the strange circumstances of the discovery, the San Diego Police Department’s homicide unit has been engaged in the case.

A family member of Haxby-Jones, who wished to stay anonymous, told a local news agency that the woman’s family was estranged. “It’s disheartening how things are unfolding. We would rather not comment at this time as we were not present and don’t possess answers to these questions,” the relative stated. They remembered her, last seen by them in 1995, as someone who often smiled, liked to have her hair and nails done, and was a military veteran.

The exact time of her death is still unknown, and officials are calling on anyone with information about her or relevant details to come forward.

Results from the medical examiner’s office are still awaited, which could shed light on the cause of her death.
