A fatal incident took place at the Gudauri ski resort in the country of Georgia, where 12 people lost their lives on the night of Friday, December 13, 2024. This tragedy is considered one of the most lethal incidents in the region’s recent past.

As reported by the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the deceased, including 11 foreigners and one Georgian, succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning in their sleeping quarters situated above an Indian restaurant where they worked.

The disaster unfolded after an oil-fueled generator was used indoors due to a power outage. The generator was positioned in a confined area near the bedrooms, which led to a dangerous accumulation of carbon monoxide. This gas, which is colorless and odorless, can result in death within minutes if exposed in an area without proper ventilation.

An investigation has started to ascertain if negligence contributed to the incident. There is a potential for charges of negligent manslaughter to be filed. Georgian law dictates that such charges, in instances involving multiple deaths, could lead to prison terms of three to five years. Forensic teams are collecting evidence and conducting witness interviews as part of the ongoing investigation.

Specialists underline the severe risks associated with the inappropriate use of generators, particularly in enclosed areas. Carbon monoxide, often referred to as a “silent killer,” cannot be identified without specific detectors, thus highlighting the necessity of stringent safety measures when operating generators.

Located in the Greater Caucasus Mountains approximately 75 miles north of Tbilisi, Gudauri is Georgia’s largest and highest ski resort at an altitude of 7,200 feet. The resort, known globally for skiing and snowboarding, has historical importance dating back to the 19th century when it served as a trading post along the Georgian Military Road, a crucial route connecting Russia and Georgia.

While the authorities have not yet released the names of the victims as they notify their families, this event has cast a dark cloud over Gudauri, a resort known for its lively winter sports culture.
