Doogie Howser M.D. Actor Dies at 73

Character actor Rif Hutton, whose nearly 200 television credits included memorable recurring parts on “Doogie Howser, M.D.” and “JAG,” died Saturday, April 18, 2026, at his Pasadena home following a 13-month battle with glioblastoma. He was 73.

His wife, voice actor Bridget Hoffman, confirmed his death. The couple, who wed in 2001, often worked together on voice acting projects and are survived by their son Wolfgang, known as Wolfy.

Hutton forged a remarkably varied career in Hollywood after an unconventional start. Born Walter Hutton on November 28, 1952, in San Antonio, he moved frequently during childhood as the son of a U.S. Air Force serviceman, spending much of his youth in New Jersey. His passion for performance ignited in eighth grade when he won a statewide speech contest reciting Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, a moment that sparked his belief that a career in performance was possible.

Following his graduation from Seton Hall University and service in the U.S. Navy, Hutton launched his acting career in the mid-1980s with guest roles on popular series including “The Jeffersons,” “Remington Steele,” “227,” and “Night Court.”

Television audiences came to recognize Hutton through his portrayal of Dr. Ron Welch on the ABC sitcom “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley. He portrayed a friend and colleague of Neil Patrick Harris’s teenage doctor character at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles, appearing in 17 episodes across all four seasons from 1989 to 1993.

Between 1997 and 2001, Hutton secured a notable recurring role on the CBS military legal drama “JAG,” portraying Lt. Cmdr. Alan Mattoni in 15 episodes on the Donald P. Bellisario-created series. His television work also included 95 episodes on the soap “Tribes” and 32 episodes on the daytime drama “General Hospital.”

His extensive television resume included memorable guest appearances on hit shows such as “L.A. Law,” “Married…With Children,” “Hunter,” “Wings,” “Murphy Brown,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Family Matters,” “Seinfeld,” “ER,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Cold Case,” “Monk,” “American Horror Story,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “NCIS: Los Angeles.” He also appeared on daytime soaps, including “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

Many viewers from the 1990s may remember Hutton from his recurring KFC commercials, where he portrayed a fictional restaurant owner named Russ Beeler.

Hutton’s versatility extended to film, including roles in “Stand and Deliver” (1988) starring Edward James Olmos, the Richard Pryor comedy “Moving” (1988), “The Thirteenth Floor” (1999), “Ice Age: Collision Course” (2016), and the 2022 crime comedy “Rattled!”

Beyond his on-screen appearances, Hutton built a career as a voice actor, looper, and Automated Dialogue Replacement artist. His voice work spanned some of Hollywood’s biggest animated franchises, including contributions to the “Shrek,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Rio,” “Ice Age,” “Hotel Transylvania,” and “Angry Birds” film series. He also worked on the acclaimed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” in 2018.

Following his brain tumor diagnosis in March 2025, Hutton participated in the National Brain Tumor Society’s Southern California Brain Tumor Walk, using his platform to advocate for others facing similar battles and encourage support for ongoing research and advancements in the fight against glioblastoma.

Beyond his acting work, Hutton was known for his dedication to the acting community and union causes. According to colleagues who remembered him, he was a constant presence on the picket line during the SAG-AFTRA strike, showing up every day at Warner Bros. as a pillar of support for fellow actors.

Tributes from colleagues and friends have poured in since news of his death, with many describing him as a dedicated professional, loving family man, generous neighbor, and stalwart union supporter who brought kindness and preparation to every project he touched.
