Missing 10-Year Old Girl Discovered Dead

Katheryn Aliceanna Bigbee, a 10-year-old girl from Piedmont, Alabama, died from multiple stab wounds after being discovered gravely injured inside her home on April 17, 2026. Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown ruled the death a homicide, with the cause of death officially released on April 21.

The tragedy unfolded just before 11 p.m. when Piedmont Police Department officers responded to a missing child report in the Asberry Church area. What began as a search for a missing girl quickly transformed into a murder investigation that has devastated the small Calhoun County town.

Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson explained that Katheryn’s parents discovered she was missing after being awakened by strange noises. “When the parents were alerted by some noise and they got up to see what the noise was, the child wasn’t in the bedroom, and that’s what led to the missing-person call,” Johnson said.

Police found Katheryn severely wounded inside a residence shortly after the initial report. Emergency responders treated the young girl at the scene before transporting her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to Chief Johnson.

Authorities arrested another juvenile at the scene and charged them with murder in connection with Katheryn’s death. The suspect’s name, age and gender have not been released, and officials have declined to specify the relationship between the two children. Privacy laws protecting juveniles have kept many case details sealed.

Chief Johnson confirmed the two juveniles were acquainted but refused to provide additional details about their connection. “I can’t really speak on that, but they did know each other,” he said. Authorities have stated the incident was isolated rather than random, though no further information will be released as the investigation continues.

Blake Trammell, who is in a relationship with Katheryn’s mother, posted about the family’s devastation on Facebook. “Our family has been torn to pieces, and we have lost the most amazing, sweetest little girl. She was a light in any room she walked into,” Trammell wrote. “I cannot express the pain, guilt, and emptiness that has come from all of this. We don’t have answers, only more questions.”

The beloved Piedmont Elementary School student was remembered by staff as having “a joyful, spunky personality” and being “an enthusiastic reader.” Her sudden death has left the tight-knit community struggling to comprehend how such a horrific event could occur.

Adrian Fitten, a Piedmont resident, voiced the community’s collective sentiment. “I couldn’t imagine coming home to some news like that, you know it would just break my heart, and I feel for the family that’s going through what they’re going through right now, and we’re praying for them,” Fitten said.

Piedmont, with approximately 4,700 residents spread across Calhoun and Cherokee counties, rarely experiences such violent crime. The community has mobilized support for Katheryn’s family through prayer gatherings organized by local pastors and community leaders, while grief counselors have been provided to students and staff at Piedmont Elementary.

A GoFundMe campaign established to assist Katheryn’s family has attracted widespread support from community members and others moved by the tragic story. As of April 24, the fundraiser had collected nearly $23,000.

The case underscores the complicated legal and emotional issues that emerge when juveniles face charges for serious violent crimes. Alabama law permits juveniles accused of severe offenses to be prosecuted in adult court based on their age and the crime’s severity, though prosecutors must work within a legal system that weighs public safety against opportunities for rehabilitation.

Funeral services for Katheryn are scheduled for Monday, April 27, at Thompson Funeral Home. The community now faces the challenging path of mourning and recovery while waiting to learn what transpired on that April night.

As legal proceedings advance, residents continue grieving the loss of a promising young life ended tragically early. Investigators remain actively working the case to ensure justice for Katheryn Aliceanna Bigbee.
