Mass Shooting at School: 10 Dead, and 12 Injured

Turkey is confronting an unprecedented crisis after two school shootings within 28 hours left the nation reeling, with the deadliest attack in the country’s history claiming ten lives at a middle school in Kahramanmaraş.

On April 15, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, 14-year-old İsa Aras Mersinli brought five 9mm pistols and seven magazines to Ayser Çalık Middle School in the Onikişubat district, where he systematically attacked two classrooms. The weapons, concealed in his backpack, all belonged to his father, a police chief inspector.

Math teacher Ayla Kara, 55, was among those killed as she tried to protect students from the gunfire. Eight students died at the scene, with a tenth victim dying from injuries the next day while hospitalized. The deceased students were identified as Mustafa Aslan, Şuranur Sevgi Kazıcı, Zeynep Kılınç, Furkan Sancak Balal, Bayram Nabi Şişik, Belinay Nur Boyraz (or Poyraz), Adnan Göktürk Yeşil, Kerem Erdem Güngör, and Yusuf Tarık Gül. Twelve others suffered injuries, with six initially in critical condition.

Necmettin Bekçi, whose two children attended the school, ultimately stopped the rampage after two staff members first subdued Mersinli in a stairwell. When the shooter broke free, Bekçi slashed the teenager’s leg with a knife, inadvertently severing his femoral artery. Mersinli bled to death at the scene.

Video recordings from the attack captured approximately 15 gunshots over a one-and-a-half-minute period, while dramatic footage showed students jumping from first-floor windows and fleeing through the courtyard as panicked parents rushed toward the school.

Authorities arrested Uğur Mersinli, the shooter’s father, the day after the attack and transferred him to Elazığ Prison. He faces potential charges of gross negligence and failing to secure firearms.

The shooter’s digital footprint revealed troubling influences, according to Turkish police. His WhatsApp profile picture displayed an image of Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old who killed six people near the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2014. “Initial findings from the investigation revealed that the perpetrator used an image on his WhatsApp profile referencing Elliot Rodger, who carried out an attack in the United States in 2014,” police stated.

An individual claiming to be Mersinli’s online girlfriend from Argentina leaked a manifesto attributed to the teenager that outlined plans for “something big.” The document contained racial and sexual slurs that were censored before release. Investigators are currently analyzing digital media seized from the perpetrator’s home and his father’s vehicle.

School personnel had identified Mersinli as a “problem student” who underwent psychological examinations in recent months. A guidance counselor noted his struggles with screen addiction and school attendance, stating: “We were in constant contact with his family. He had a screen addiction. He did not want to come to school. Even when he came, he wanted to leave.”

The Kahramanmaraş attack occurred just 28 hours after another school shooting in Şanlıurfa province, where a former student used a shotgun to wound 16 people at a vocational high school in the Siverek district before taking his own life. Twenty people had been detained by April 17 in connection with that shooting.

School shootings had been rare in Turkey until this week, making the consecutive incidents particularly jarring for the nation. On April 17, the interior and education ministries convened a joint security meeting in Ankara that included both ministers, all 81 of Turkey’s provincial governors, police chiefs, and provincial education directors.

Turkish authorities launched a sweeping crackdown on social media in the attacks’ aftermath. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that 67 social media users were detained over posts targeting 54 different schools. Separately, police ordered arrests for 83 individuals accused of glorifying crime and criminals in posts about the two shootings.

A specialized team from the Ministry of Family and Social Services was established to provide psychosocial support to affected students and their families. Kahramanmaraş schools were closed for two days following the incident as the community mourned.

Nine victims were laid to rest on the afternoon of April 16, with hundreds of grieving family members and community members attending the funerals. Cevdet Yesil, father of victim Adnan Göktürk Yeşil, described the agonizing hours spent searching for his son before receiving confirmation of his death at the hospital.

Şuranur Sevgi Kazıcı’s aunt learned of her 10-year-old niece’s death when the girl’s name was read aloud on television news. Mahmut, uncle of victim Zeynep Kılınç, remembered his niece as a clever girl who respected others.

Hundreds of educators gathered in Ankara and Izmir, demanding enhanced school security measures, as the nation grapples with preventing future tragedies. Police have stated that, based on initial findings, no link to terrorism has been established, describing the attack as an isolated act.
