NBC’s “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie was back at her desk Thursday morning, May 7, appearing alongside Willie Geist while Craig Melvin took the day off. The 54-year-old journalist made no mention of her abrupt departure from the previous day’s broadcast, when she left the set 90 minutes into the show and didn’t come back.
When cameras resumed after a commercial break on May 6, 2026, Melvin was alone and offered viewers minimal explanation for his co-anchor’s absence.
“Savannah had to leave a little early,” Melvin said. “She’ll be right back tomorrow, though.”
The unexpected departure marked the second time in three weeks Guthrie has vanished from the broadcast without warning. Last month, she disappeared mid-interview with Anne Hathaway, who was promoting “Mother Mary” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” Hoda Kotb, who stepped down as a main anchor in January 2025, filled in when the show returned from break.
A Code Phrase Behind The Scenes
NBC has established a confidential system to notify Guthrie of major updates in her mother’s case while she’s broadcasting live, according to an April 2026 report. When producers say she is “needed off set,” it means investigators have a significant development to share. The network has said it would grant her more leave if necessary but expects her to remain full time on the program.
A source told The Sun that Guthrie’s Wednesday exit was “for some sort of appointment, and her exit had nothing to do with her mom.” Still, the timing raised questions online, particularly because Melvin and Dylan Dreyer went on to host a Mother’s Day segment immediately after her departure.
The Disappearance That Changed Everything
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was abducted from her home near Tucson, Arizona, in the early morning of Feb. 1, 2026, after being seen last on Jan. 31. A masked person caught on security footage is believed to have taken her during the night. More than three months have passed without any trace of her. No suspect has been named, and no motive has been established.
Because Nancy Guthrie suffers from numerous health issues and depends on daily medication, the case has carried heightened urgency from the start. The reward for information has grown to as much as $1 million.
Savannah Guthrie traveled to Arizona almost immediately and stepped away from “Today” for two months to help with the search. She returned to the show on April 6, when she told viewers: “It’s good to be home.” Her brother, Camron Guthrie, and sister, Annie Guthrie, along with their spouses, released a joint appeal in March 2026.
“We desperately ask this community for renewed attention to our mom’s case — please consult camera footage, journal notes, text messages, observations or conversations that in retrospect may hold significance,” the family said. “No detail is too small. It may be the key.”
A Return The Following Morning
Guthrie has not commented publicly on her early exit Wednesday, either during Thursday’s broadcast or through her social media accounts. She shares two children with her husband, Michael Feldman: daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, nine. Throughout the crisis, she has kept details about her family closely held.
A Family Marked By Loss
The youngest of three children, Guthrie was born in Melbourne, Australia. Her father, Charles Guthrie, relocated the family to Tucson when she was two years old after a job transfer. He died of a heart attack in 1988, when Savannah was 16.
In 2012, when Nancy turned 70, Savannah described her mother as “an amazing and noble woman” who is “whip smart, funny, full of integrity and wisdom.” Three years later, in 2015, she took Nancy back to Australia, where they visited Sandringham Hospital, where Savannah was born, and the family’s old home in the Beaumaris suburb.
For now, the investigation in Arizona grinds on without resolution, and Guthrie is left navigating the brightest hours of morning television under the weight of an unresolved nightmare.
