Melania Rejects Trump’s White House Moves

The demolition of the White House East Wing, a Roosevelt-era structure, started this week to clear the way for a massive 90,000-square-foot ballroom designed to hold 900 guests. The project has drawn intense scrutiny after excavators began tearing down the historic wing, which houses the Office of the First Lady, the East Colonnade, and the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.

First Lady Melania Trump has shared her worries about the demolition in private conversations with close associates, making clear she did not initiate the undertaking, according to administration officials quoted by The Wall Street Journal on October 25, 2025. The First Lady has remained silent publicly on the destruction of the historic wing.

Photos showing heavy machinery tearing apart the building emerged this week and rapidly circulated across social media platforms, triggering widespread public outrage. The destruction has become so extensive that reports indicate it can be observed from space.

President Trump had previously pledged to leave the existing East Wing intact during construction, claiming the ballroom would be built beside the historic structure. That promise has now been broken as demolition crews dismantle the wing entirely.

The ballroom project’s price tag has ballooned from an initial $200 million estimate to a minimum of $300 million. President Trump has maintained that private donations will fund the entire undertaking. The planned structure will span nearly twice the footprint of the White House’s central building, which measures 55,000 square feet, and its guest capacity has grown from an original 650 to 900 people.

Stephanie Grisham, who previously served as Melania Trump’s chief of staff and has since become critical of the Trump administration, told CNN the East Wing’s destruction is distressing. She noted how the project bypassed typical White House renovation protocols.

The administration has not yet presented ballroom blueprints to the National Capital Planning Commission, the federal body charged with reviewing and authorizing construction on federal land. Will Scharf, whom Trump named as chair of the commission, said last month that while demolition doesn’t need approval, actual construction does.

On October 21, the National Trust for Historic Preservation delivered a letter requesting the White House halt demolition pending plan reviews. The group raised alarms that the new building’s size and elevation might dwarf the White House and undermine its classical architecture, which relies on smaller East and West Wings for balance.

The letter emphasized: “As we approach the 250th Anniversary of our country’s founding, the preservation of historic places that represent our nation’s history has never been more relevant or important.”

Reuters reporter Jeff Mason pressed President Trump on October 23 about the project’s lack of transparency. The president responded defensively, stating: “I haven’t been transparent? Really? I’ve shown this to everybody that would listen. Third-rate reporters didn’t see it because they didn’t look.”

Despite the First Lady’s private reservations, sources previously told People magazine she backed the renovation because it would make the presidential residence look more like their Mar-a-Lago property in Florida. A Mar-a-Lago club member told the magazine that the Trumps take pride in their Florida home’s design and enjoy showcasing it, suggesting that remodeling the White House to reflect that style is consistent with their preferences and that President Trump personally contributed to the decor at their Florida residence.

The destruction unfolds during an extended government shutdown that has left hundreds of thousands of federal workers, including TSA agents and air traffic controllers, laboring without paychecks.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle defended the project, stating that President Trump is dedicated to enhancing the White House without taxpayer expense and that the upgrades are intended to benefit future presidents and American visitors to the People’s House.

Neither the First Lady nor the White House have responded to requests for comment regarding Melania Trump’s reported concerns. Melania Trump primarily resides in New York and has seldom attended official events at the White House since her husband’s return to the presidency.

Officials have stated that the East Wing offices will be reconstructed as part of the ongoing project.
