Vance Breaks His Silence on 2028 Plans

Vice President JD Vance said during an interview taped on June 10, 2026 that he will discuss a potential 2028 presidential campaign with his wife after this year’s midterm elections, expressing confidence that President Donald Trump will support whatever decision he makes about pursuing the White House.

Speaking on “CBS Sunday Morning” in an interview taped June 10, 2026, at the vice presidential residence, Vance said that Trump regularly brings up the 2028 race in their discussions, while Vance himself refrains from raising the subject.

“I never bring it up. But sure, the president brings it up a lot, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately,” Vance told CBS correspondent Robert Costa. “The president’s a political animal. He loves this stuff. He’s very fascinated by it.”

Vance said Trump discusses the 2028 race in an inquisitive manner, asking questions about what will unfold and how to secure the party’s future success, without directly encouraging or discouraging his vice president from running.

“I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do,” Vance said, though he noted they haven’t yet discussed the specifics of any future decision.

Vance said any choice about 2028 will be made after November’s midterm elections, and that he and Second Lady Usha Vance plan to talk through their family’s next steps only once midterm voters have cast their ballots. The couple has three children and is expecting a fourth in July, which The Washington Post previously reported may have contributed to Vance’s decision to delay announcing his 2028 plans.

“The way I make decisions is, I try not to make them until I absolutely must,” Vance said, rejecting the notion that he devotes considerable time to thinking about a presidential campaign and emphasizing his concentration on his vice presidential responsibilities.

Vance’s remarks arrive amid growing speculation about the 2028 Republican nomination, with him and Secretary of State Marco Rubio seen as leading candidates. Trump has publicly speculated about both as potential successors, asking audiences at a May 2026 event whether they preferred Vance or Rubio, then joking that the two would make a good ticket together.

Rubio has publicly stated he would not seek the GOP presidential nomination if Vance enters the race, though Trump has not indicated which of the two he would support. The president’s playful public comments about pitting the two against each other suggest he enjoys the political intrigue surrounding his potential successors.

Beyond Vance and Rubio, Republican insiders identify several other possible 2028 contenders, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, and conservative media personality Tucker Carlson. Even Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, has reportedly expressed interest in running for higher office, according to The Guardian.

Prediction markets reflect the competitive nature of the emerging 2028 field. Polymarket shows California Governor Gavin Newsom leading with 16.1 percent odds, followed closely by Rubio at 15.8 percent and Vance at 15.7 percent, with more than $629 million in total volume traded on the market. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York trails at 5.5 percent.

Vance appeared on CBS to promote his second memoir, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” which details his conversion to Catholicism and is scheduled for release on June 16. The book follows his 2016 bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy,” which chronicled his childhood in Appalachia and launched him into the national spotlight.

During the wide-ranging CBS interview, Vance also defended the Trump administration’s ongoing military conflict with Iran and discussed his family life with Usha, with whom he has three children and is expecting a fourth in July.

Before becoming vice president, Vance represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate for two years after winning election in 2022. A former Marine Corps servicemember, he obtained his law degree at Yale Law School, where he met his wife.

Trump selected Vance as his running mate in 2024, pairing the former venture capitalist and author with the former president for a successful campaign that returned Trump to the White House. The partnership brought together Trump’s populist base with Vance’s appeal to younger conservatives and working-class voters in Rust Belt states.

Despite his reticence to make firm commitments about 2028, Vance’s positioning suggests he is seriously considering a presidential bid. His emphasis on waiting until after the midterms allows him to gauge the political landscape and Republican Party strength before making what could be the most consequential decision of his political career.

The vice president acknowledged that Trump’s frequent mentions of 2028 reflect the president’s deep interest in politics and desire to ensure Republican success beyond his own tenure. Rather than viewing these conversations as pressure, Vance characterized them as natural discussions between two political figures invested in their party’s future direction.
