Two men were killed and five other people wounded in a shooting near a Toronto street festival on Saturday, July 11, in a rare outburst of public gun violence that sent thousands of festivalgoers fleeing for cover. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said she was “deeply disturbed and angry about this reckless and irresponsible act of violence right in the middle of a festival attended by families.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a social media post that he was devastated by the senseless violence that claimed two lives and injured others. He called for those responsible to face arrest and lifelong imprisonment, adding that his thoughts were with the victims, their families and everyone affected.

Local city councillor Josh Matlow submitted a safety motion to the city’s economic and development committee this week.
