Beloved Child TV Star Dead at 19

Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who introduced audiences to Jia, the young girl who spoke to Kong through sign language, died Tuesday, July 21, in a car accident in Maryland. She was 18. Her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed that his daughter was killed early Tuesday morning, according to details he shared publicly.

Authorities say Kaylee was riding in a 1995 Honda Accord when the driver left a Maryland road and struck a roadside ditch in the early hours of the day. Joshua Hottle said he first learned his daughter had been in a serious wreck, then received a second call from officials informing him that her heart had stopped on the way to the hospital.

In a livestream that stretched nearly 23 minutes, the grieving father delivered the news to followers in American Sign Language, explaining that he was flying from Texas to claim her body. The raw, unfiltered nature of the broadcast underscored the shock rippling through a family and a community that had watched Kaylee grow up on screen.

A Child of a Deaf Family

An Atlanta native, Kaylee came from a multigenerational deaf family, a lineage that shaped both her identity and her path into performing. She got her professional start young, appearing in commercials before she reached her teens. One of her earliest and most notable spots was a public service announcement for Glide, a live video messaging app embraced by many in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. She was just nine years old when she filmed it.

That early work laid the groundwork for a breakout that would soon reach a global audience. What began as small-screen appearances quickly evolved into a role that placed her opposite one of cinema’s most enduring giants.

The Girl Who Spoke to Kong

In 2021, Kaylee stepped into the role that would define her young career, playing Jia in “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Her character communicated with King Kong through sign language and lived on Skull Island alongside Dr. Ilene Andrews, portrayed by actress Rebecca Hall. Audiences responded, and so did the filmmakers. She returned to the part in 2024’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.”

For a young actress from a deaf family, the visibility carried weight far beyond the box office, offering representation on a scale rarely afforded to deaf performers. Her screen credits extended beyond the monster-movie universe. Kaylee also appeared in the “Magnum P.I.” reboot, playing a character named Joon in a season 4 episode of the series. The role added another line to a résumé that, at 18, was still very much in its early chapters.

A Career Cut Short

The circumstances of the crash remain under review, and dispatch audio from the scene has since surfaced, offering a grim record of the moments after the vehicle went off the road. Officials have not detailed what caused the driver to veer, and Joshua Hottle’s account remains the primary public source of information about the loss.

For those who followed her work, the news lands with particular cruelty. Kaylee had reached a point where her name carried recognition, her performances praised for bringing authenticity and depth to characters who did not speak in the conventional sense but communicated everything through expression and sign. She embodied a form of storytelling that many in Hollywood are only beginning to embrace, and she did it while still a teenager.

Her father’s decision to announce her death in ASL felt fitting for a family whose language and culture had always been central to who they were. It was a farewell delivered in the very form of communication that Kaylee had brought to millions of moviegoers, many of whom had never before seen sign language woven so intimately into a blockbuster.

Details surrounding funeral arrangements had not been made public, and Joshua Hottle indicated that his immediate focus was traveling to Maryland to be with his daughter. The full weight of the tragedy, for a family that had shared so much of Kaylee’s journey with the public, was still settling in.

Kaylee Hottle was 18. In a short career, she left an outsized mark, proving that a performer who never uttered a spoken line could hold the emotional center of a film seen around the world. Her role as Jia will endure on screen, a lasting record of a young actress whose story ended far too soon.
