Michael J. Fox says his return to acting after a six-year absence has “prolonged” his life — but the 65-year-old “Back to the Future” star acknowledged that while he hasn’t retired, Parkinson’s disease may ultimately determine whether he continues to act.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 29 in 1991 and withdrew from on-screen work during the COVID-19 lockdowns when daily memorization of dialogue became unreliable. After six years away, he has appeared on the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking” — and the experience, he said, has changed something fundamental about how he feels.

“It’s really prolonged my life and made my life interesting in a way that I didn’t think it would be to this point,” Fox said. He stopped short of calling it a permanent return, adding: “I haven’t walked away from acting, but whether I continue depends on whether my condition allows it. I’m letting the disease guide those choices.”

A Return Built Around the Disease Itself

Fox explained that his comeback became feasible when he discovered a role that allowed him to incorporate rather than hide his condition. When he learned Harrison Ford’s character on “Shrinking” had Parkinson’s, Fox personally called series creator Bill Lawrence to make his interest known. The conversation was direct: Fox told Lawrence that a show featuring Parkinson’s should have included him from the start, and Lawrence quickly found a way to bring him aboard.

Fox said the on-set environment was unlike any he’d known. He no longer worried whether his symptoms or energy levels would compromise the production — his condition simply became part of his performance. Ford praised Fox’s “courage, fortitude, and grace” to Variety.

Fox received an Emmy nomination for his performance in the third season of “Shrinking,” and a fourth season is in development. He quipped to People magazine in October 2025 that his relationship with retirement has always been complicated: “I’m always retiring.”

The Long Road to Speaking Out

Fox received his diagnosis in 1991 but didn’t disclose it publicly until 1998. During those years, he privately wrestled with how the world would respond. In the late 1990s, he anonymously visited Parkinson’s disease chatrooms to observe reactions to people living openly with the condition. He was startled and relieved to find the response was overwhelmingly supportive rather than pitying.

That discovery influenced his choice to become an outspoken advocate. He told his wife, Tracy Pollan, that partial measures wouldn’t work — that concealing his condition out of vanity was unacceptable. He sought to normalize living with Parkinson’s during an era when such diagnoses were rarely made public.

Fox maintains his belief that a cure will arrive during his lifetime — a conviction that fuels the organization’s mission.

Why He Stepped Away — and How He Came Back

Fox’s 2020 retirement decision stemmed from a concrete challenge: his condition made on-set work and line memorization increasingly difficult. A scene from Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in which a character breaks down after forgetting his lines, struck him as a mirror of his own situation. He announced his retirement that year through his memoir, “No Time Like the Future.”

But by October 2025, the retirement was over. Fox had filmed a supporting role on “Shrinking” Season 3 — his first on-screen acting work since a 2020 guest appearance on “The Good Fight.” He told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2024 that he had always left the door slightly open, saying he could imagine returning if a role allowed him to bring his real-world challenges directly into the work rather than around them.

More than 10 million people worldwide are estimated to be living with Parkinson’s disease, including approximately 1.1 million Americans. Fox has long stood as the most visible face of that community’s push for a cure — a role he shows no sign of relinquishing, on screen or off.
