Days later, on July 24, the Pentagon removed four of the most recent names from its casualty list, cutting the displayed toll to 14 and drawing accusations of a cover-up; officials blamed “data anomalies.”
The escalation followed a bloody weekend. Two U.S. Army soldiers on active duty — Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Carrollton, Texas, and 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii — were killed when Iran struck targets in Jordan. A third U.S. service member died in Iraq while disposing of an Iranian drone.
For Ingraham, a longtime Trump ally, the arithmetic of November is unforgiving. With the midterms a little more than 100 days away, she told viewers that time is running short for the president to extract himself before voters weigh in.
A Warning From the President’s Own Network
Ingraham did not soften the political stakes. She cited a new poll from the Washington Post and Ipsos showing that 69 percent of Americans disapprove of how the conflict has been handled, and she argued the war risks becoming a drag on the party’s turnout. Republicans, she said, cannot afford to let it fester into “an endless distraction, especially if they want to win in November.”
In a discussion with guest Doug Schoen, a Democratic strategist, Ingraham outlined the president’s difficult position: congressional Republicans had handed war authority to the executive branch even as spending requests mounted, she said, and candidates worried about being linked to those costs. Schoen said the concern was justified.
She was not alone at the network. Hours earlier, Fox News analyst Brit Hume said on “Special Report” that Trump was vulnerable on the war issue and needed to resolve it quickly, given that he had campaigned on avoiding lengthy conflicts.

Iran responded by re-closing the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States reimposed its naval blockade of Iranian vessels. The renewed U.S. strikes were meant to reopen the waterway. Iran has attacked American allies in the region, launching strikes on Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, which hosts a U.S. Navy fleet.
Trump has promised to answer for the American deaths. A U.S. official said the president “will make Iran pay for the recent deaths of U.S. soldiers,” and that the strikes “will continue until the President deems otherwise.” The economic ripple is already visible at home: fuel costs nationwide have returned to a $4-per-gallon average as hostilities escalate.
The war has also strained Trump’s own account of it. He initially cast the operation as a matter of weeks. When a reporter pressed him on the gap between that promise and the reality of nearly five months of fighting, the president bristled, insisting the mission had grown in scope. He argued the early phase was a narrow effort to strip Iran of a specific capability, and that the current campaign is aimed at permanently ending any path Tehran might have to a nuclear missile.
An Awkward Exit at Joint Base Andrews
The exchange came as Trump stepped off Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday, returning from the World Cup final in New Jersey. Confronted with the timeline question, he attempted to revise the numbers on the fly, offering a stretch of “a week-and-a-half, two weeks” before losing the thread of his own sentence. Trailing off, he told the assembled reporters, “Thank you very much,” and turned toward Marine One.
That halting moment, and the alarm now sounding inside a network that has long championed the president, underscore how far the political ground has shifted. Trump has waged the campaign against Iran without congressional approval, and the mounting casualties, the reclosed strait and the climbing pump prices have converged into a liability that even friendly voices no longer feel obligated to ignore.
Whether the president can engineer an exit on his own terms remains unclear. Hume suggested Trump may simply need more time than the calendar allows. Ingraham framed it more bluntly, returning again and again to the same phrase that has become the through line of the network’s coverage: the clock is ticking.
