Richard Gere Lets Loose With Trump Rant

A clip of actor Richard Gere condemning President Donald Trump has gone viral, drawing a peculiar retaliation from the White House that relied on a long-ago-debunked myth about the Hollywood star.

White House communications director Steven Cheung, known for vulgar social media posts, responded to the resurfaced interview by invoking a baseless decades-old rumor involving Gere and a gerbil. Rather than addressing the 76-year-old actor’s policy critiques, Cheung posted a screenshot of a MEL Magazine article about the fabricated tale, writing he wasn’t “going to listen to a guy that may have put a gerbil up his” behind.

That salacious story has been thoroughly discredited. Snopes labeled it false, and even National Enquirer reporter Mike Walker found nothing when investigating the claim. Gere himself dismissed such “crazy” and “infamous” gossip in a 2008 Metro interview, saying he simply chose to ignore it. “It’s a waste of energy,” he said at the time.

The Interview That Started It All

User @MarcoFoster_ shared the footage on X, where it accumulated 1.3 million views since Sunday, July 19. The original interview was conducted by The Associated Press in June 2026, but only recently caught fire online.

In the footage, Gere delivered an extended critique of the president while simultaneously expressing faith in America’s future trajectory. He characterized Trump as an elderly figure with a “damaged personality” and argued the nation has been sliding toward authoritarianism  — but contended that shift has peaked and will soon reverse direction. His hope, he explained, is that the pendulum swings back with greater wisdom, leaving both the country and the world in better shape and more committed to mutual care.

Despite his harsh assessment, Gere maintained an optimistic tone throughout. He said, “He’s hurt so many people. And he’s caused so many deaths. But, it will be over.” One viewer responded to the sentiment by commenting, “I admire his optimism.”

Foreign Aid Criticism

Beyond broad political philosophy, Gere took aim at a concrete administration action: the president’s elimination last year of USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development. The president terminated most foreign aid programs through the agency on what Gere described as “day one” of his second term.

The actor labeled that decision “insane” and suggested the president lacked understanding of the agency’s purpose. He also criticized the president’s advisers and portrayed foreign aid as representing the best aspects of American character — a wealthy nation extending help to those without access to essentials such as healthcare. Abandoning that mission, Gere contended, should prompt shame rather than pride.

An Unusual Exchange

The juxtaposition between Gere’s substantive policy critique and Cheung’s tabloid-based retort has only amplified interest in the video. The exchange reflects a broader pattern in which earnest political commentary collides with surreal responses from administration officials.

Gere has long been a vocal opponent of the president and remains widely recognized for his role alongside actress Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman.” Yet his recent statements demonstrate someone focused less on past achievements than on the direction ahead—someone who, even while cataloging concerns, continues returning to the conviction that political cycles inevitably shift. Whether the president shares that view is unclear, though the White House response suggests little interest in engaging the substance of Gere’s remarks.

As the clip continues spreading, it has become the sort of internet-era spectacle where thoughtful geopolitical reflection meets an infantile comeback rooted in fiction. Gere’s 2008 comment about ignoring distractions seems increasingly relevant as this latest controversy unfolds around him.
