Kennedy Jr., the country’s top health official, faced a blistering rebuke from President Donald Trump during a June 2026 Oval Office encounter that centered on the health secretary’s failure to prove a scientifically discredited theory linking childhood immunizations to autism. A recently leaked report of the meeting reveals Trump expressing frustration that Kennedy, 72, had not accomplished enough to validate the supposed connection during a year and a half leading the Department of Health and Human Services.
The 80-year-old president, though less hostile to vaccines overall than his health secretary, remains fixated on the matter to such a degree that he “steers nearly every conversation” with Kennedy toward the autism question. Trump’s intensity during the June confrontation caught Kennedy off guard, according to the account.
It was not Kennedy’s first such dressing-down. At a May luncheon at Trump’s Virginia golf property, the president accused Kennedy of having the “yips” over his reluctance to move faster on investigating the purported autism link.
Sweeping Vaccination Changes Follow Internal Clashes
The private tensions have accompanied dramatic shifts in federal immunization policy. Trump signed an executive order in May calling for a sharp reduction in the number of vaccines administered to American children, from 17 to 11, based on a department report. The president has also considered breaking apart the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three individual shots, a step with no scientific rationale and contradicted by numerous studies finding no autism link.
Public health authorities warn the effects are already visible. The United States is experiencing its highest measles caseload since 2000, when the disease was declared eliminated domestically. Outbreaks of measles, pertussis and other serious infectious diseases are concentrated among unvaccinated individuals who are otherwise healthy, according to health officials.
A department spokesperson would not address private discussions between Trump and Kennedy but said both men share a dedication to tackling chronic disease in American children through rigorous science. White House spokesman Kush Desai defended the administration’s stance, asserting that parental worries about climbing autism rates had been dismissed or ridiculed and that officials were determined to investigate them scientifically.
Kennedy’s Record Draws Continuing Fire
Kennedy, who holds no medical degree, scientific credentials or health research background, has spent years questioning vaccine safety and promoting fringe theories. He has suggested Wi-Fi signals cause cancer, that coronavirus vaccines contained computer chips for population control, and that HIV does not cause AIDS. His anti-vaccine advocacy has been tied to a 2019 measles outbreak in Samoa that killed 83 people.
The Senate confirmed Kennedy on February 13, 2025, by a 52-48 margin as the 26th secretary of the department, which oversees a federal budget of $1.7 trillion. Justice Neil Gorsuch of the Supreme Court administered the oath, and Trump issued an executive order on childhood chronic disease that same day.
During a September 2025 Senate hearing, Kennedy asserted that CDC data indicate roughly 76 percent of Americans suffer from a chronic disease and, when Sen. Mark Warner questioned how many people had died of COVID, responded that the answer was uncertain. Dr. Richard Besser, who previously served as acting director of the CDC, challenged multiple Kennedy statements, telling PBS News that COVID vaccines saved more than a million American lives.
A department video released in September 2025 provoked condemnation from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) for portraying immunizations as in competition with healthy eating, exercise and clean water programs. Dr. Tina Tan, the organization’s president, said Americans deserve evidence-based information and safe, effective vaccines. The IDSA noted that decades of declining infectious-disease mortality only occurred after vaccines became widely available and used.
Trump’s Persistent Doubts Despite Own Vaccine Record
Though Trump has championed COVID-19 vaccination and claimed credit for Operation Warp Speed, he has long expressed skepticism about immunizing children and repeatedly raised the possibility of an autism connection—a theory lacking any scientific support. The president has also promoted the unsubstantiated claim that pregnant women using Tylenol may trigger autism.
