Brenda Fricker, the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award and a performer whose credits ranged from a searing turn in “My Left Foot” to the tender “pigeon lady” of “Home Alone 2,” has died at 81. The performer passed away on Thursday evening, July 16, in Dublin following a decline in health, according to a statement from her agent, Phil Belfield.

Fricker had been unwell for some time, and her passing arrives a year after she gave a rare interview about the toll her health had taken. To generations of moviegoers she is inseparable from two roles that could hardly be more different — the fierce working-class mother in a stark Irish drama and the gentle recluse who befriends a lost boy in a Christmas blockbuster.

A Landmark Oscar Win

Fricker made history in 1990, becoming the first Irish woman to win an acting Academy Award. She took the best supporting actress prize for her portrayal of Bridget Fagan Brown in the 1989 film “My Left Foot,” playing the determined mother of Christy Brown, an artist born with cerebral palsy who could control only his left foot. Daniel Day-Lewis, who played Brown, won best actor that same night — the first of his record three Oscars in the category. The pair accepted their awards at the 62nd Academy Awards in Los Angeles on March 26, 1990.

The film’s director, Jim Sheridan, remembered a performer of uncommon force. Sheridan said she “took no prisoners” and described her as vibrant, full of life and firmly possessed of her own opinions.

The success of “My Left Foot” reached far beyond Fricker’s own mantel. Gráinne Humphreys, director of the Dublin International Film Festival and a close friend, called the movie the little film that defied expectations, an outlier at a time when Irish cinema drew little international notice. The country’s now-thriving film industry, she said, was built on the back of that breakthrough.

Fricker’s own view of the honor was characteristically wry. Writing in 2015, she said she was probably prouder that her name had become Dublin rhyming slang for knickers than she was of the Academy Award itself — a statuette she kept in a plastic shopping bag under her sink before it eventually reached the shelf.\

In the 1992 hit “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” Fricker played a homeless woman living among the birds of Central Park who takes in Kevin McCallister, the character played by Macaulay Culkin. The role introduced her to a vast young audience and became, alongside her Oscar-winning work, the performance many remember first.

Six Decades on Screen

Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker began acting in the 1960s at the age of 19, moving among film, the stage and popular television in Ireland and Britain long before her work as Bridget Fagan Brown won her wide acclaim. Throughout six decades in the industry, her work spanned over 90 film and television productions from 1964 through 2024, and the Irish Times counted her among the most respected Irish actors of her generation.

She also starred in “The Field,” another celebrated Irish film of the era, and took supporting roles in a string of 1990s American movies including “So I Married an Axe Murderer” and “A Time to Kill.” On television, she was part of the original cast of the BBC medical drama “Casualty.” She later appeared opposite Cate Blanchett in “Veronica Guerin,” a film about the murder of an Irish reporter in 1996.

In September 2025, her autobiography, “She Died Young: A Life in Fragments,” reached the Irish Sunday Times bestseller list. The book set happy childhood escapades with her sister, Grania, against her struggles to overcome sexual violence and mental health issues that led to her being institutionalized several times.

In February, the Dublin City Council voted to confer the Freedom of the City, the capital’s highest civic honor, on Fricker.

A Frank Farewell and National Grief

In a rare interview ten months before her death, Fricker spoke bluntly about being confined to her bed. She said she was in pain every day and would become breathless simply by talking, and she described watching “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” during nights she could not sleep. It was a stark contrast to the woman who once insisted she had never known tiredness in her life.

Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris said Ireland had lost a national treasure and praised Fricker as an ambassador for Irish talent worldwide. “Quite simply, we will never see the like of her ever again,” Harris said.

Belfield struck a similar note in announcing her death, calling it an honor to have known and worked with her. He said Fricker would keep a place in the hearts of film and television fans the world over — a fitting tribute to an actress who moved with rare ease between prestige drama and holiday spectacle, and left an indelible mark on both.
