Woman Fatally Struck by Man Falling From Building

A pedestrian died during the early morning of July 19, 2026, after a man plunged from a 12-story apartment building in Nagoya, Japan, striking her on the sidewalk below — she succumbed to her injuries while he survived the fall in critical condition.

Shinsei Taguchi, 29, remains unconscious and in critical condition after falling from the building at around 1 a.m. and landing directly on Houra Inaba, 23, who was walking with a friend on the pavement below, according to police accounts. Emergency responders transported both to a hospital. Inaba died at roughly 5:30 a.m. from hemorrhagic shock.

Investigators with the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters have not yet determined whether Taguchi jumped deliberately or fell by accident. They also have not confirmed which part of the building he fell from, leaving the circumstances of the tragedy largely unexplained even days afterward.

Location and Emergency Response

The apartment building stands in central Japan, approximately 500 meters northeast of Yabacho Station, which serves the Meijo Line of Nagoya’s municipal subway, near the Nagoya Expressway’s downtown loop. Kyodo News described the location as “a busy area” filled with retail shops and entertainment venues. The area has also been described as dense with commercial and residential high-rises, the kind of neighborhood that stays active well past midnight.

The emergency call came from the friend who had been walking beside Inaba. At approximately 1 a.m., officials were notified by a woman reporting that someone had plunged from a building and struck her companion. Responders arrived within minutes, and police secured the surrounding area to begin their investigation.

For Inaba, there would have been no warning. By every available account, she was simply walking when Taguchi fell from above and struck her.

Similar Tragedies in Recent Years

While rare, such incidents have occurred before in Japan. In September 2024, a teenage high school student fell from a rooftop observation area at a high-rise complex adjacent to JR Yokohama Station, south and west of the capital. Both she and a pedestrian below died from the impact.

The 17-year-old fell from the rooftop observation deck on the 12th story of NEWoMan Yokohama, a retail complex with direct access to the rail terminal. She had come from Kimitsu City in Chiba Prefecture. The victim she struck was a 32-year-old office worker from Midori Ward, Yokohama, who had been walking with three friends. The teen succumbed to her injuries roughly an hour after the fall; the pedestrian died later that night.

In October 2020, a teenage male high school student jumped from a shopping and entertainment building in Osaka, landing on a 19-year-old female college student who was walking on the street below. Both died from their injuries.

These prior incidents bear an eerie resemblance to what occurred in Nagoya: someone descending from a significant height in a densely populated area, striking a young woman on the pavement who had no opportunity to avoid the impact. In all three cases, the pedestrians killed had no connection to those who fell — victims only because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong moment.

Investigation Continues

Whether this was an accident or an intentional act has significance beyond any legal proceedings — it also affects how authorities will ultimately categorize the fatality. In both the 2024 Yokohama incident and the 2020 Osaka incident, investigators determined that the individuals who fell had done so intentionally. Whether that conclusion applies in Nagoya remains unconfirmed, and authorities have refrained from making premature judgments.

For now, the answers depend in part on Taguchi’s condition. He remains unconscious, and until that changes, investigators may have difficulty determining his intent or piecing together precisely what occurred just before his fall.

Police have not indicated a timeline for their findings or provided additional information regarding when conclusions might be reached about how or why Taguchi fell.

As of July 23, the site remained under investigation, the circumstances of the fall unclear, and the case unresolved.
