Christy Knowings, the comedian and actress who spent three seasons on Nickelodeon’s beloved sketch series “All That,” died Tuesday after suffering a severe asthma attack that left her with brain damage. She was 46.
Knowings had been hospitalized Friday following the attack and was placed on life support at a Los Angeles-area hospital. Her family made the difficult decision to remove her from life support on Tuesday, and she died that night.
Her aunt, Tyleah Joseph, announced the death on Wednesday on Facebook. The news sent ripples of grief through the entertainment community, particularly among those who grew up watching the irreverent kids’ comedy that made her a household name in the late 1990s.
Three Seasons on a Nickelodeon Institution
Knowings first came to Nickelodeon’s attention through “And Now This,” a sketch-comedy special produced by television personality Rosie O’Donnell.
That exposure landed her a spot on “All That,” which she joined in 1997 alongside fellow newcomers Leon Frierson and Danny Tamborelli for Season 4. The trio joined an ensemble that already included comedian Kenan Thompson, actress Amanda Bynes, actor Kel Mitchell, actress Lori Beth Denberg and actor Josh Server. Comedians Nick Cannon and Gabriel Iglesias joined the cast later in the show’s run.
Knowings remained a main cast member from 1997 to 1999, and she later returned as a guest in Season 10. During her time on the show, she inhabited a range of recurring characters, among them Penny Lane, news anchor Brenda Stone and Jessica — her character in the fan-favorite “Whateverrr!!!” sketches opposite Bynes.
In a 2019 interview with Occhi Magazine, Knowings reflected warmly on that chapter of her career. “Being on ‘All That’ was definitely an incredible experience,” she told the publication. She expressed pride at being part of something iconic that brought joy to so many people, noting that fans frequently told her how meaningful her presence on the show had been to them.
Life Beyond the Sketch Stage
After her run on “All That” concluded, Knowings stepped back from Hollywood but did not abandon creative life entirely. She appeared in three episodes of “Sesame Street” alongside her real-life twin brother, Chris Knowings, who had his own credits on Nickelodeon productions including “Taina” and “The Nick Cannon Show.”
In adulthood, Knowings shifted her attention toward pursuing a career as a hip-hop musician. In 2020, she released a folk single titled “To the World,” demonstrating her range across musical genres.
Her manager, Al Hill, paid tribute in a statement to Variety. “Christy was a multi-talented lady,” Hill said. “Whether it was singing, acting, dancing, she was always creating. Always professional and dedicated to her work.”
Tributes Pour In From Former Co-Stars
Kenan Thompson, the longtime “Saturday Night Live” cast member who appeared alongside Knowings during “All That’s” formative years, took to Instagram on Thursday to mourn her passing.
“Man this one hit hard!!! Rest well Christy!!!” Thompson wrote. Thompson said he never could have imagined this day and sent love to her family, calling Knowings a real one and one of the funniest people around whom he would miss.
Thompson, who has been a mainstay on “Saturday Night Live” for more than 20 years, also posted about Knowings on Facebook, where he urged followers to show her page support.
Second “All That” Cast Member Lost This Year
The loss marks a particularly painful stretch for the “All That” community. Knowings is the second former cast member of the show to die in 2026. Kianna Underwood, another alumna of the series, died in a hit-and-run collision in Brooklyn in January.
Together, the two deaths have cast a shadow over a show that, for millions of children who came of age in the 1990s and early 2000s, represented some of the most joyful hours of their childhoods.
Knowings herself seemed to understand that weight. In that same 2019 interview, she noted that fans continued to approach her decades later to express what her presence on the show had meant to them — a legacy she carried with evident pride.
Christy Knowings is survived by her family. No funeral arrangements have been publicly announced.
