FOX News Star Rejects Trump in Stunning Move

Liberal Fox News personality Jessica Tarlov says she refused a holiday present from President Donald Trump — a personalized “Trump 2028” baseball cap that she describes as a joke she’s not laughing at. The 42-year-old Democratic political strategist discussed the gift in late July during an appearance on the MeidasTouch program “On Sunday with Jack Cocchiarella,” making her position crystal clear: she has zero interest in cozying up to this White House.

Tarlov Warns Against Charm Offensive

Tarlov joined Fox News in 2017 as a contributor and now serves as a rotating co-host on “The Five,” frequently functioning as the program’s lone progressive counterweight. During her July interview, she was promoting her forthcoming book, “I Disagree: Winning Arguments Without Losing Friends,” which centers on persuasive communication that doesn’t destroy personal connections. Yet when it comes to Trump, 80, that philosophy evidently has its limits.

The president has been selling merchandise featuring the 2028 slogan since April 2025, despite acknowledging the Constitution is “pretty clear” he is “not allowed” to seek another four years. The 22nd Amendment explicitly prohibits a third term. Trump, however, keeps floating the idea anyway — he recently said he intends to pursue what he called a fourth presidential term and wore a “Trump 2028” hat to the July 24, 2026, White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Tarlov received her own version of that cap as a Christmas present, complete with a handwritten message from Trump thanking her for her support. She told the MeidasTouch show the note was clearly intended as humor. But she took the broader message seriously. “I believe Trump will do everything in his power to be able to stick around as long as possible — and certainly if Steve Bannon gets his way,” Tarlov said, adding that she is “not really interested in palling around or playing nice.”

The Bannon Factor

Her mention of Steve Bannon, who once served as Trump’s White House chief strategist and currently hosts a MAGA podcast, was deliberate. Bannon has stated publicly that he expects Trump to seek office again in 2028 and secure victory, Constitution be damned. Tarlov treats that forecast not as a workable legal theory but as a warning sign — evidence of ambitions she believes deserve scrutiny rather than dismissal as mere bluster.

Some colleagues at Fox News have urged Tarlov to meet Trump face-to-face, insisting she would find him charming. She rejected the suggestion outright, explaining she has no desire to be won over and considers keeping her distance the wiser course. She also acknowledged she is “not good at faking a smile.”

Why Mamdani’s White House Visit Was Different

Tarlov’s refusal to engage Trump personally doesn’t mean she expects all Democrats to do the same. She defended New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who sat down with Trump during a November 21, 2025, White House meeting. Tarlov argued Mamdani navigated the encounter correctly — extracting what she characterized as billions of dollars in investment for New York while refusing to soften his public criticism or abandon his principles. She pointed out Mamdani wasn’t even smiling in photographs from the visit, treating it as a transactional necessity rather than political flattery.

The contrast Tarlov outlined was deliberate: meeting with a president to deliver concrete benefits for voters is justifiable; accepting charm for charm’s sake is not — at least not where she’s concerned.

A History of Public Clashes

The relationship between Tarlov and Trump hasn’t been limited to peculiar holiday gifts. In April, Trump attacked Tarlov on Truth Social after she cited his unfavorable polling data on “The Five,” calling her “one of the Least Attractive and Talented People on all of Television” and describing her voice as “so grating and terrible” he had to turn her off. He demanded Fox News executives remove her from the air entirely, labeling her “a real loser.” The network declined. Tarlov had reported on air that most surveys showed Trump’s approval sitting at 35 percent — the sort of inconvenient fact that triggered his outburst.

Tarlov remains a rotating co-host on “The Five,” regularly serving as the table’s only liberal presence challenging pro-Trump narratives. Her upcoming book centers precisely on that dynamic — advancing a viewpoint while preserving the human bond. But when it comes to Trump himself, she appears to have concluded that bond was never an option worth pursuing.
