The period Jennifer Garner spent off camera raising her three children carried a price tag, and the “Alias” star said the bill arrived all at once when her marriage to actor Ben Affleck was over. It was a financial one, she said on a podcast episode released August 25, 2026.
Talking with entrepreneur and podcast host Emma Grede on “Aspire with Emma Grede,” Garner traced the fallout to where her career stood at the time. “I panicked when I was first out of my marriage and realized I had taken such a step back in my work,” Garner said.
There was no telling, she said, how much longer the roles would keep arriving. Nobody in Hollywood writes a performer a fatter check for turning 43, 55 or 60, as she pointed out. Then came a second thought that rearranged her priorities entirely: supporting herself and her kids was now on her.
Each pregnancy also cost her professional time, Garner told InStyle in a Summer 2026 cover story, describing having to “give up a year/year-and-a-half of performance while you are pregnant, having a baby, recovering.” Those breaks came from the physical demands of pregnancy and recovery, she said, rather than one deliberate withdrawal.
In the podcast episode, Garner also looked back at her early breakout success, recalling that once fame hit she called friends to explain why she had “disappeared.”
Garner and her longtime manager, Nicole King of Linden Entertainment, began considering ways she could keep earning, a pivot dated to age 45. Certain conditions could not be bent for Garner, who lives in Los Angeles. She remembered telling her manager that jobs in Los Angeles worked, but that vanishing onto a distant set for half a year at a stretch did not.
Celebrity offers no safety net, she said; recognition, once it is yours, cannot be handed back, nobody else is quietly picking up the tab, and the bills keep coming anyway. The math turned pressing in a hurry for someone who had rarely thought about money at all, and earning became the immediate task.
On what the breakup did not hand her, she was equally direct. “I didn’t get some huge payout,” she said of the split.
Only part of the plan was jobs near home.
Garner co-founded Once Upon a Farm in 2017, and the organic food for babies and children company went public at a valuation of $724 million in February 2026. The business, she told Grede, was a deliberate way to bring in money for her family, alongside roles near Los Angeles, where she and Affleck share parenting duties.
Awards-season praise and reliable income are two different things — that is what the confession registers as a reminder of, coming from an actor with “Dallas Buyers Club” to her name, along with the fact that a career paused for caregiving does not simply pick up where it stopped. Predictability, not prestige, was the issue behind the financial panic she described.
Her approach to work after the divorce became, in her own description, “very calculated,” with decisions shaped around both income and family life, according to remarks reported August 27.
The obvious follow-up came from Grede: does Garner wish she had watched her money more closely earlier on? Her answer was no. What she got in return was time with her children.
Sheer luck is how she describes taking the occasional job while spending most of her days at home, and she said she felt grateful for the chance. Both were hers, she said — the work and the years at home. Looking back to complain about any of it is beyond her, she added. It is what it is.
Garner and Affleck married in 2005 and had three children together: Violet, 20; Fin, 17; and Samuel, 14. Their separation was announced in 2015, but 2018 was the year the divorce became final — three years of unraveling, most of it in front of the paparazzi.
Neither one has been especially guarded about how it ended. The biggest regret of his life is what Affleck, the “Argo” director, called the divorce in a 2020 interview with The New York Times. Garner has pointed to the dismantling of a family as the hardest element, along with losing a genuine partnership and friendship.
Garner divorced actor Scott Foley in 2004. Affleck went on to wed singer/actress Jennifer Lopez in 2022, a marriage that ended in a divorce settled in January 2025 and finalized in February 2025.
How unsentimental it is sets Garner’s telling apart. The years she spent at home are not cast as a sacrifice, and injustice is not the frame she puts on the scramble that followed. Her account is of a trade made with open eyes, and of a bill that came due later than she expected — one she chose to pay by building a food company and rearranging her filming schedule around school pickups.
