Trump’s First Wife Ivana Issued Surprising Talk About MelaniaTrump Breaks His Silence on FOX Star’s Sudden Exit

Instead of Dallas, First Lady Melania Trump chose the White House Rose Garden on the opening night of the first Republican midterm convention, September 9, 2026. A White House official had confirmed on September 3 that she would skip the gathering altogether.

President Donald Trump had pushed for the convention to lift his party’s midterm outlook, and as he traveled to Dallas, his wife was speaking at the White House Historical Association’s annual presidential sites summit. “The White House stands as an architectural autobiography of America, embodying the enduring values of ambition, democracy, and civic life through its design, craftsmanship, and the objects within,” she told the 2026 Presidential Sites Summit audience. The American Airlines Center hosted Trump on both nights: he closed each evening, delivering the convention’s keynote on the second. Vice President JD Vance gave the vice-presidential keynote both nights, and Donald Trump Jr., Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and House Speaker Mike Johnson were among the 109 speakers.

The same address walked the audience through preservation and design work tied to her tenure: the White House Tennis Pavilion, renovations to the Queens’ Bedroom and Bathroom, conservation of historic Zuber wallpaper in the President’s Dining Room, and the restoration of the Rose Garden.

The garden she stood in has since changed shape: Trump had the central lawn of her own 2020 restoration torn out in 2025 and replaced with a white limestone patio, saying it would work better for entertaining.

Her absence comes as her standing inside the Trump family gets picked over online again, fed by recirculating photographs of her beside Marla Maples, the president’s second wife. That pairing once drew a blunt verdict from the woman who came before both of them.

Trump then traveled to Ireland on Saturday, September 12, again without the first lady, and offered an explanation from the U.S. ambassador’s residence. “My wife is here in spirit. She’s watching right now,” he said. She had declined to make the seven-hour trip, he told the audience, joking that she might not be quite as friendly as he is when it comes to meeting people, and he passed along her regards. The room laughed.

Ivana Trump — the president’s first wife and the mother of Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump — was promoting her memoir “Raising Trump” in October 2017 when Jim Axelrod asked her to draw the difference between Maples and Melania Trump. “One is nobody. And the other one is first lady,” she said in an interview broadcast on CBS’ “Sunday Morning” on Sunday, October 8, 2017.

“She’s a showgirl. Never achieved anything in her life,” she said in the same interview. Her Page Six interview promoting the book went further: Maples “broke my marriage and destroyed my family,” and “now she’s nobody.”

The blame fell on Maples, not on her husband, whom she described as a man with no shortage of options. “Donald would get 1,000 business cards in the pocket every night,” she said. “He could choose any girl he wanted to have.”

By 2017 the grievance was decades old. Ivana Trump, born in Czechoslovakia in 1949, was modeling in New York by 1976 when she met Trump; they married in 1977. Her first encounter with Maples, 14 years her junior, came on a December 1989 ski trip in Aspen, when the younger woman approached her outside a mountain restaurant and said, “I’m Marla and I love your husband. Do you?” Her memoir records the reply: “Get lost. I love my husband.” She later called it unladylike and said she had been in shock. Accounts of what happened on the slope afterward contradict one another and the episode is not established.

The tabloids feasted on the divorce in the early 1990s. Trump and Maples wed in December 1993, separated in May 1997, when their daughter, Tiffany, was three, and divorced in June 1999. The president met the model Melania Knauss in September 1998 and married her on January 22, 2005; she was 34 and he was 58.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” drew a sharper line from her: “I’m basically first Trump wife. OK? I’m first lady.” Stephanie Grisham, then the first lady’s communications director, called that “attention-seeking and self-serving noise.” Ivana Trump died at her Manhattan home on July 14, 2022, at 73, after a fall.

The pictures that resurfaced show the first lady standing alongside Maples at the rehearsal dinner for Tiffany Trump’s Mar-a-Lago wedding in November 2022, read as evidence that the two had made an easier peace than Ivana Trump ever did with her successor.

Her 2026 calendar has been thin: 38 public days, by one August tally. She resurfaced at a Rose Garden event for her foster care initiative on Thursday, August 20, her first outing since the World Cup final on July 19.

“Good afternoon! I heard you missed me,” she said. “Here I am!” IndyCar and Fox Corporation backed the $2 million she unveiled for scholarships for young adults aging out of foster care.

None of this is new. She stepped away for 53 days in 2025, and the 2024 campaign trail saw little of her; that year’s Republican National Convention drew her for the final night alone, and she did not speak.

Her portfolio covers artificial intelligence and children, foster care, non-consensual intimate imagery and children separated in the Russia-Ukraine war; the Take It Down Act, which she championed, was signed on May 19, 2025.

She became the first presidential spouse to preside over a United Nations Security Council session, on March 2, a meeting on children in armed conflict. The Grand Foyer was the setting on April 9 for a rare prepared address in which she took no questions and denied a friendship with Jeffrey Epstein: “I am not Epstein’s victim. Epstein did not introduce me to Donald Trump.”

Barron Trump, 20, the only child of Donald and Melania Trump, has joined them on just a few outings since his father returned to office.
