Popular Comedy Actor is Dead at 78

The bushy-mustached character actor behind the “Jump to Conclusions” mat turned up in more than 400 theater, film and television projects and rarely saw his name near the top of a movie’s billing.

Richard Riehle, who played Tom Smykowski, the Initech product manager who loses his job in director Mike Judge’s 1999 comedy “Office Space,” died at 78, his representatives at Artists & Representatives and Wright Entertainment Inc. confirmed in a joint statement on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026.

The representatives said in a statement to Fox News Digital, “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of our beloved client, Richard Riehle, this past weekend,” and disclosed no cause. The talent agency and management company said he would be remembered for his “genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity,” especially toward emerging actors and filmmakers.

Friends told TMZ that Riehle died of natural causes on Thursday, Oct. 15, in Los Angeles. The Associated Press also reported that he died Oct. 15.

Across nearly five decades, Hollywood cast him as the beleaguered middleman, the school principal and the jolly Santa Claus. He kept working to the end. Riehle had about 10 projects in development, among them “Made Vicious,” with the late Tom Sizemore, and “Mr. Blue,” with actor Daniel Baldwin.

He logged 440 acting credits, 10 of them posthumous, including the completed short films “77” and “Class Clown.” The last of his film roles released during his life came in the 2026 independent movies “Boris Is Dead” and “The Cowboy Killer.”

Trapped in a Medical Halo

Tom Smykowski gave “Office Space” its strangest arc: pushed out at Initech, he survives a hit-and-run and pours a large settlement into a prototype of a “Jump to Conclusions” mat. One scene put Riehle in a wheelchair with a medical halo ringing his head.

An EMT with a set of casts rigged the halo onto him, Riehle told the A.V. Club in 2017. He said he spent eight or nine hours in the hardware before a production assistant freed him with a cast cutter the EMT had left behind.

The mat itself vanished. Riehle asked about it when Judge brought him in for the 2009 film “Extract,” and the director’s answer was that it had simply disappeared.

From Menomonee Falls to Broadway

Richard Mathias Riehle was born May 12, 1948, in Menomonee Falls, Wis., the oldest of six children. His father died when Riehle was 13, and his mother went back to work as a nurse.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1970, where he took speech and drama courses, then earned a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. He learned the trade at Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Mich., and spent years in regional theater in the Pacific Northwest.

Riehle first appeared on screen as an extra in the 1975 John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn film “Rooster Cogburn.” His first speaking part was an unnamed bartender in “Joyride,” the 1977 road-trip drama starring Desi Arnaz Jr. and Melanie Griffith.

He reached Broadway in 1986 in playwright Emily Mann’s drama “Execution of Justice,” and returned in 1999 as the corrupt ex-cop Pat McGloin in a revival of “The Iceman Cometh,” alongside actor Kevin Spacey.

The Guard Who Let Kimble Escape

Riehle played the racist quartermaster in director Edward Zwick’s “Glory” (1989) and the guard who lets actor Harrison Ford’s Richard Kimble slip away in “The Fugitive” (1993). He was a banker in director Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” (1995), the father of Rob Schneider’s character in “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo” (1999) and the mechanic Bill Cozbi, who bails out Kristen Wiig’s character in “Bridesmaids” (2011).

His other films included “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Of Mice and Men,” “Free Willy,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Lethal Weapon 4” and “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.” He played Santa Claus in eight different projects, among them 2011’s “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.”

Television used him just as steadily. He played Principal Ed Rooney on NBC’s short-lived “Ferris Bueller” series in 1990-91 and Walt Finnerty in 45 episodes across all five seasons of “Grounded for Life,” from 2001 to 2005. He turned up repeatedly in the “Star Trek” franchise, playing Batai in “The Next Generation” episode “The Inner Light” and appearing on “Voyager” and “Enterprise,” and he guested on “Murder, She Wrote,” “Home Improvement,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “The West Wing,” “ER,” “NCIS” and “The Young and the Restless.” He voiced Bumi on the animated series “The Legend of Korra,” and one of his last roles was Warden Reynolds in two episodes of HBO’s “Barry” in 2023.

A Novel in His Back Pocket

Donal Logue, who played Riehle’s son on “Grounded for Life,” wrote on Instagram that his screen father was “an actor’s actor — humble, kind, and incredible at his craft.” Logue recalled the sitcom’s final network audition, when Riehle made him laugh so hard that he broke character, and the small things, like the classic novel always stuffed in the back pocket of Riehle’s old-school slacks. Logue also wrote, “A huge thanks to Tyrone Finch for being there for Richard through all his health challenges in the last few years of his life.”

Luke Barnett, a friend and actor, wrote in a guest column: “If saying yes to some tiny movie meant missing out on a bigger one, well, that was fine with him. He’d rather spend his Tuesday on a set somewhere, even a tiny set, than sit around waiting for a more prestigious phone call. I loved that about him.”

His wife, Jane Latham, and their four children survive him.
