Major Breakthrough: Melania Trump Secures Ceasefire

The communication channel Melania Trump built with Moscow and Kyiv to reunite Ukrainian children has now produced a ceasefire over one starving occupied city.

The White House announced on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, that the First Lady had secured a localized truce between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, a city in the southern Kherson region that Russian forces seized in February 2022. It takes effect Oct. 29 and applies to that city alone — not to the wider war.

“Both nations agreed to temporarily stop all military action in Oleshky to allow for humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway,” the White House statement said.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire,” First Lady Melania Trump said in the statement. “Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water.” She said it was clear that without her intervention, aid could not get in and the elderly could not get out.

Eating Garden Weeds to Survive

Oleshky sits across the Dnipro River from Ukrainian-controlled Kherson, pinned between the water and Russian forces. The city has had no gas or electricity since 2023. The last regular food delivery by road arrived May 26, according to the U.N. human rights office, and residents face death from hunger or disease. Bodies at the city morgue decompose without electricity, and there is no running water.

Residents who are still there have resorted to eating garden weeds. One hospital remains partially operational, opening a few days a week to perform critical amputations. Children in the wider Oleshky area suffer from malnutrition and have no access to education. About 1,700 residents remain trapped by one estimate; another puts the number at roughly 2,000. Around 50 children have been unable to leave, according to the White House.

Each government blames the other. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said the population is living under a “full blockade” imposed by Russian forces, and Kyiv says its attempts to deliver supplies have failed. The Kremlin said in September that Oleshky faced “a critical situation,” adding that Russia’s military was working to resolve it and pointing the finger at Kyiv.

Peskov Will Not Name the Routes

Both Russian and Ukrainian officials confirmed the limited ceasefire on Friday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov credited the first lady with a “significant contribution” to the humanitarian operation and said the two militaries were coordinating the timing.

“Those who wish to do so will be able to leave this settlement,” Peskov said.

In Kyiv, Davyd Arakhamia, a lawmaker from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party who took part in the negotiations, described what is coming next. “An operation to lift the blockade of the town of Oleshky and its surrounding areas will begin shortly,” Arakhamia said. He highlighted the roles played by both Pope Leo and Melania Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Oleshky with President Donald Trump in a recent phone call, according to the Kremlin. Putin also told Pope Leo by telephone that he backed a Vatican initiative to get supplies to civilians in the town and was ready to cooperate, while blaming Ukraine for the conditions there.

The Conversation That Started in New York

Oleshky came to the first lady’s attention during a private discussion at her Fostering the Future Together event in New York City, held during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. She and her representative then used the line they had opened with both governments through six earlier reunifications of 34 Ukrainian children. Both nations assigned teams to work out the mechanics, including demining roads thick with explosives.

Her formal title in the talks was Exclusive Intermediary, working with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to set the terms, timing, technical procedures and objectives. Under the agreement, non-military civilian teams from both countries will visit residents in their homes and arrange transportation for anyone who wants to leave — to Russia or to Ukraine, as each family chooses. An impartial American news organization will travel with the teams to document the process. Newsmax said its cameras would be granted “exclusive access to document the effort.”

Trump praised his wife’s work on Friday, saying her side had contacted both Moscow and Kyiv. The announcement lands as he presses Zelensky to strike a deal with Putin to end the war.

How long the truce will hold is unclear. The White House statement set no end date, and Peskov declined to detail evacuation routes or the duration, saying only that the operation would require a minimum of several days.

Before the full-scale invasion, the town was home to about 24,000 people.
