Will Ferrell has a confession to make about one of the most celebrated holiday films: he wasn’t so sure it would work. The comedian revealed on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast on Tuesday, July 14, that he harbored serious doubts about 2003’s “Elf” when cameras first started rolling — and he even recalled the four blunt words that ran through his head the moment he caught his reflection dressed as Buddy the Elf.

Sitting in his trailer, wearing Buddy’s yellow tights, Ferrell said he stared into the mirror with a growing sense of dread. “I’m sitting in my trailer in my ‘Elf’ tights, looking in the mirror, going ‘What have you done?’” he told Poehler.

Cold Feet in Yellow Tights

Part of what unsettled Ferrell was the shooting schedule itself. The production tackled the New York scenes first, meaning he had to embody Buddy before he’d fully figured out who the character was. Wandering city streets in an elf costume, he wasn’t sure whether he was crafting something magical or something that would follow him around for the wrong reasons.

He also worried about how audiences would react to seeing him trade his sketch-comedy reputation for a giant elf suit. Ferrell said he feared people would remember him as the guy who was so funny — and then made a movie where he played a giant elf. Poehler, who understood the gamble immediately, framed it in stark terms: he could end up remembered as a genius behind a forever-classic Christmas movie, or the tights could be the thing that ended his career.

Ferrell summed up the high-stakes feeling with a baseball metaphor: “This is either going to be a home run, or it’s going to be a complete strikeout.”

The Only Game in Town

The pressure wasn’t just artistic — it was practical. Ferrell explained that after he left “Saturday Night Live” in 2002, he didn’t have a lineup of projects waiting for him, and “Elf” was essentially the whole ballgame.

Ferrell said in 2022 that there really wasn’t a pile of scripts waiting, and that he was doing well from the show and figured he should use that visibility to take a swing at something new. That “something new” turned out to be a human raised by elves in the North Pole — a concept he loved, even if the script that came with it needed plenty of work.

Ferrell has said that when he received the material, the idea was strong but the writing had a long way to go, and with “Old School” not yet released, there was no guarantee of momentum. His conclusion was simple: the movie wouldn’t land unless he committed to it fully.

A Co-Star Who Wasn’t Laughing

Ferrell’s doubts had company on set — a story he told separately in a July 2024 appearance on Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s “MeSsy” podcast. His late co-star James Caan, who played Buddy’s biological father, famously didn’t “get” Ferrell’s humor while they were making the film. Caan would needle him between setups — “I don’t get you. You’re not funny,” as Ferrell recalled it — and Ferrell would fire back, “I know. I’m not Robin Williams.”

But Ferrell has always framed the ribbing as affectionate, and there was a payoff. Caan even reshaped his character’s arc, opting for a slow build rather than escalating frustration, so his temper could explode in the pivotal boardroom scene where he throws Buddy out. Ferrell said Caan was totally right about the choice.

The real vindication came at the premiere. Walking out of the theater together, Caan told Ferrell that everything he’d thought was too over the top during filming looked brilliant on screen. For Ferrell, hearing that from Caan was the ultimate compliment — and he’s noted with a laugh that Caan’s on-set annoyance was completely genuine, which only made Buddy’s relentless enthusiasm land harder. Caan died in 2022.

From Strikeout Fears to Comedy Legend

In hindsight, of course, the gamble paid off spectacularly. “Elf” became a permanent fixture of the holiday season, and Ferrell’s post-SNL career took off from there. He followed it with a run of comedy staples: “Anchorman” in 2004, “Talladega Nights” in 2006, “Step Brothers” in 2008 and “Blades of Glory” in 2007 — the last of which co-starred Poehler herself.

Ferrell has continued to embrace the character over the years. In 2024, he showed up to a game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Los Angeles Kings dressed once again as Buddy the Elf, proof that the character he once fretted over in a trailer mirror has become one of the most cherished roles of his career. The home run, it turns out, cleared the fence by a mile.
