The exchange happened as Trump flew to Waterford Township, Michigan. Jacobs asked whether senators should be out campaigning for the November midterms rather than staying in Washington to work on the SAVE Act, a voting measure the president has prioritized. Trump ignored the question’s substance and shouted back, “What a stupid question!” When Jacobs followed up—”Shouldn’t they be out campaigning, though?”—the president repeated the insult before shifting tone. He then told her she was “a smart person” and reminded her that she had accurately forecast his Iowa caucuses victory.
A Documented Pattern
This was hardly the first such incident. In May, Trump told a female reporter inquiring about White House ballroom construction that she was “not a smart person” and a “dumb person” as he departed the building. The president confirmed the construction would continue, noting it was on time and coming in below cost.
That same month, at the Lincoln Memorial, Trump called ABC reporter Rachel Scott’s question stupid and labeled her “one of the worst reporters.” He made the remarks while discussing Reflecting Pool cleanup efforts. Experts See a Deliberate Strategy
