A University of California, Santa Cruz student died on August 13, 2026, after a vehicle she was traveling in plunged off a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean along one of the California coast’s most scenic — and treacherous — stretches of road. The male driver escaped the submerged car with minor injuries, but the student was trapped inside and later died at a medical facility despite life-saving measures.
Car Goes Over Cliff Near Steamers Lane
Emergency crews received a report at approximately 12:50 a.m. that a vehicle had left the roadway on West Cliff Drive near Steamers Lane in Santa Cruz, California, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department. The road is known for its winding path along the coastline, where dramatic cliff faces drop sharply to the ocean below.
The entire complement of five units belonging to the Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to the location, along with personnel from the Santa Cruz Police Department. When first responders reached the cliff’s edge, they discovered that one occupant — the male driver — had already managed to free himself from the submerged vehicle and made it to safety, suffering only minor injuries. The second occupant, a female student, remained trapped inside the car as it sat beneath the water.
Four rescue swimmers from the Santa Cruz Fire Department entered the water to reach the trapped woman. After retrieving her from the vehicle, she was transported to a nearby medical facility, where she later died despite the efforts of medical staff to save her life.
UC Santa Cruz Community Mourns the Loss
Because the victim was identified as a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, UC Santa Cruz police officers were also called to the crash site. Scott Hernandez-Jason, a spokesman for UC Santa Cruz, expressed the university’s grief in a statement to the Pajaronian.
“We were heartbroken to learn that the victim was a UC Santa Cruz student,” Hernandez-Jason said.
He extended the university’s condolences to those closest to the victim and said the institution is making support resources available to community members affected by the tragedy. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office later identified the victim as Alli Singh, 19, of Selma.
A Perilous Road With Stunning Views
West Cliff Drive is a beloved landmark for both residents and visitors in Santa Cruz. The road follows the natural contours of the shoreline, bending and curving past dramatic cliffs and open-ocean vistas. Steamers Lane, the stretch of coast near the crash site, is particularly well-known in the area. The elevated roadway and sheer drops to the water define the landscape.
The circumstances that sent the vehicle off the cliff in the early morning hours of August 13 remain unclear. Authorities have not indicated what factors played a role in the crash.
Investigation Ongoing as Questions Remain
The Santa Cruz Fire Department confirmed in a statement that the matter has not been closed. “The incident remains under active investigation as investigators work to determine the circumstances and cause of the crash,” the agency said. Both the Santa Cruz Fire Department and the Santa Cruz Police Department are involved in the inquiry.
Singh was a psychology major entering her third year at UC Santa Cruz, where she was affiliated with John R. Lewis College.
The loss has sent ripples through the UC Santa Cruz campus community. The university has indicated it is actively connecting affected students, faculty, and staff with grief and mental health support services in the days following the accident.
As investigators continue their work to piece together what happened early on August 13, the community is left to grieve a life cut short along one of California’s most iconic coastal roads.
