Nicole Kidman Breaks Silence on Marriage to Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman has offered new reflections on her highly publicized relationship with Tom Cruise, characterizing their decade-long union as something that felt entirely unremarkable to her at the time despite the intense scrutiny it attracted. In a British Vogue cover feature, the 59-year-old actress discussed how marrying Cruise reshaped her relationship with fame and prepared her for the relentless demands of celebrity culture.

The marriage, which began on Christmas Eve 1990 when Kidman was just 23, lasted until Cruise initiated divorce proceedings in February 2001. The split was finalized six months later in August 2001, ending a relationship that had made the Australian actress one half of Hollywood’s most watched couples.

The pair met in 1989 while filming director Tony Scott’s “Days of Thunder,” which served as Kidman’s first major Hollywood feature. Their chemistry extended beyond the racing drama, leading to a Christmas Eve wedding the following year.

Ignoring Professional Warnings

Kidman told the magazine that people around her repeatedly cautioned that the union would derail her career, predictions she flatly dismissed. She recalled suddenly finding herself at 22 or 23 married to an enormously famous actor, though she felt it was simply what was meant to be given the depth of their romantic connection. Her response to those who worried about her professional future was simple: she did not care.

That comfort navigating high-profile environments — awards ceremonies, fashion events, the constant circuit of public appearances — stems directly from being married to one of the planet’s most famous actors during her formative years, Kidman explained. The experience normalized what would overwhelm most people, making the spotlight feel routine rather than extraordinary.

Building a Formidable Career

The dire professional forecasts never materialized. Throughout the 1990s, while tabloids fixated on their relationship, Kidman assembled an impressive filmography that showcased her dramatic abilities. “To Die For,” “The Portrait of a Lady,” and “Practical Magic” demonstrated range that transcended the celebrity gossip surrounding her personal life.

She shared the screen with Cruise twice during their marriage. Ron Howard’s 1992 film “Far and Away” drew lukewarm reviews. Their second collaboration proved more enduring: Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 psychological drama “Eyes Wide Shut,” which became the legendary director’s final work. Kidman portrayed Alice Harford opposite Cruise’s Bill Harford, a casting decision Cruise himself advocated for. In a recent Sight & Sound magazine conversation, Cruise revealed he had personally recommended Kidman to Kubrick for the role, calling her a great actress whose casting he championed from the start.

Rather than stumbling after the 2001 divorce, Kidman’s career accelerated. Both “Moulin Rouge!” and “The Others” arrived that same year, followed by her Academy Award-winning turn in “The Hours” in 2002 — a performance that secured her status among Hollywood’s top-tier talent.

Maturing Under Scrutiny

The actress has previously acknowledged the challenges of entering marriage so young. A 2013 Vanity Fair interview featured Kidman stating plainly that she was a child when she got married and needed to grow up. The new British Vogue piece expands on that sentiment, with Kidman observing that the bulk of her adult existence has unfolded under public observation, leaving her with scant memory of life before fame.

Kidman and Cruise adopted two children during their years together: Bella, now 33, and Connor, now 31.

Following the split, Kidman wed musician Keith Urban in 2006. They had two daughters together — Sunday Rose, now 18, and Faith Margaret, now 15 — before that 19-year marriage concluded in 2025. The British Vogue interview touches on that more recent chapter as well, with Kidman describing a time of unexpected transition and continued efforts to remain emotionally available despite present uncertainties.

Embracing Contradictions

The profile captures Kidman in a contemplative but upbeat mood. Her summer included stops in London, Ibiza, Paris, and Portofino, while her social habits reflect her contradictory nature — equally at home playing Scrabble or hitting late-night clubs, occasionally wearing a dark wig for anonymity. She emerges as someone who balances extraordinary visibility with instinctive privacy, analytical thinking with emotional intuition.

British Vogue’s September 2026 edition becomes available for purchase on Aug. 20.
