The boos began the instant Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., brought the president into his speech. The 73-year-old congressman had lost South Carolina’s Republican Senate primary runoff hours earlier, and when he stood onstage with his family on the evening of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, he granted that President Donald Trump had inserted himself into the contest and had every right to do so. The crowd in front of him, his own supporters, buried the line in jeers.

Norman did not drop the subject. He said Trump’s policies were good, then delivered the line that captured an evening of Republican-on-Republican frustration. “I never understood why he got in this race,” Norman said. He would accept the outcome, he added, and something good would eventually come of it.

A concession speech was something he had never written, he told the room, because he had not believed a loss was in the cards. It was. Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., 62, finished with 52.45 percent to Norman’s 47.55 percent, a margin of 4.9 percentage points. Her full name is Darline Graham Nordone; she dropped her married name for the ballot, according to reporting published August 29. Statewide, her edge came to 18,069 votes, figures reported August 30 show. Norman carried Graham’s home Upstate region, while she took the Midlands, Pee Dee and Lowcountry, and she beat him by 16,841 votes in Horry County, where Trump rallied for her.

From Appointment to Nomination

Tragedy put Graham in the Senate. Her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, died suddenly on July 11 of an aortic dissection at age 71. The remainder of that term went to Darline Graham by appointment on July 13, two days later, from South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster. When the two met in the Oval Office after her brother’s death, Trump encouraged her to run for a full six-year term, praising her as a spectacular person and a true American patriot. She launched her campaign shortly afterward, having never held elected office. Before politics, she headed South Carolina’s Commission for the Blind and held posts at Clemson University and the state Department of Employment and Workforce. In the August 11 first round, she led a 10-candidate field with 33 percent to Norman’s 24 percent.

The nomination came with a string of firsts. As of August 30, Graham is the first woman and the first HBCU graduate to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate, and the first woman to win a Republican U.S. Senate nomination in the state. Democrat Krystle Matthews, in 2022, was the last woman to win a major-party Senate nomination there.

In Columbia, South Carolina, she celebrated with a speech that left no doubt whom she credited. “South Carolina truly is Trump Country,” Graham told supporters. Speaking of her brother after the runoff win, she said: “The past few weeks have been an unbelievably challenging time for our family, but you know what? We did it.” Trump declared her the winner himself on Truth Social at 8:44 p.m. on election night, reminding his followers she had run with his endorsement.

The Money Behind the Runoff

Onstage, Norman itemized the financial disparity. Outside spending targeting his campaign had reached some $8 million, he said, a sum far beyond anything he could hope to counter. His own funding, he told the crowd, came from South Carolina donors and from his personal account, while his opponent’s arrived from outside political action committees — an observation, he said, rather than a complaint. Reporting published August 30 put his personal outlay at more than $1 million of his own fortune in the final week alone.

Some $827,000 went to Graham’s bid from MAGA Inc., the super PAC aligned with Trump, according to federal campaign finance filings, and that money went to voter calls and text messages. Corporate chief executives, lobbyists and well-known Republican donors also sent cash to her fledgling operation. Trump stumped for her in person at a Myrtle Beach rally on Friday, August 23, telling the crowd that he had recruited her into the contest and that he had to make certain she entered because nobody would be better. A lopsided loss for her was what GOP strategists had forecast.

A Debate Stumble on National Security

Her inexperience surfaced at the runoff debate. Asked about Taiwan and the South China Sea, she conceded that national security was not her area and that she was not that informed on the subject, and the audience booed. How she was catching up came up again Monday, August 24, when Graham said the topic had never come up from anyone she met while traveling the state.

Comparisons with her late brother were unavoidable. Lindsey Graham, known as the “Trump whisperer,” often expressed an interest in foreign policy. Norman, during the campaign, called Taiwan a definite ally, and he credited Trump with enabling the island to defend itself against China.

Norman’s Exit and the November Matchup

Norman’s second defeat of the year came in the August 25 runoff. The first was South Carolina’s Republican gubernatorial primary on June 9, where he finished third and failed to reach the June 23 runoff. In the 2024 Republican presidential primary, he endorsed former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley over Trump.

A pledge to back the nominee still closed his remarks: he would support Graham as best he could, he said. The moment did not land cleanly. Her name tripped him up, drawing laughter, and a jab about not knowing the winner’s last name appeared to come from his wife, Elaine Norman, shouted out from the podium. Graham advances to a general election in November against Democrat Annie Andrews, a Charleston pediatrician, with Libertarian Kasie Whitener and Constitution Party candidate Mark Hackett also on the ballot — as of August 30, the first South Carolina Senate general election with three female candidates. Solidly Republican is how the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the contest; 1998 was the last time South Carolina sent a Democrat to the Senate.
